Can’t Be – 9
Story written on September 14, 2005 by Dinky.
A week has passed and Dana hasn’t been by The Planet. She hasn’t spoken to anyone and everyone just figured she was training hard for her tournament. It was true, but she wasn’t ready to see Alice. She felt like a coward. Even though they agreed to be “just friends”, she found herself ashamed for not being true to herself and breaking it off w/ Tonya. She loved Alice but she wasn’t ready. Alice played off everything. She pretended to be herself, but deep down she was dying. Shane was the only one who knew what was going on between them, but was there for her silently. They didn’t want anyone else to know. Alice didn’t even have the guts to call Dana. It hurt too much. What was she going to say? She felt like such a loser for initiating the whole thing. She still needed to know why Dana didn’t pick her. She needed to know for herself so that she could have closure. She was afraid of what Dana would say. She cut her off and tried to beat her to the whole “just friends” agreement. I mean, she couldn’t stand to hear it from Dana, so she did it. She hated rejection, and she couldn’t handle it coming from Dana.
Dana was starting to dread her time w/ Tonya. She felt so guilty for cheating on her, and it made her put her all into her training. She couldn’t even look at Tonya. But, Tonya was so wrapped up in her work and the wedding anyway. She didn’t even notice. So, it was Saturday night and everyone was going to Milk. Shane had called her to let her know that everyone was going. Tonya pushed Dana to go because she’s been training so hard. Dana agreed hoping that she would get a chance to see Alice. She needed to see her. She couldn’t believe it’s been a week since their talk and Alice didn’t call her. Well, she didn’t call Alice either, but still. She wondered what was going on w/ Alice.
Alice was sitting at the table w/ the gang when Tonya and Dana walked in. She looked up, and gave the fakest smile and waved to them both, and nobody really noticed. After all, she had started drinking the moment they got there. Dana waved at everyone, and when it came to Alice, she smiled. She felt so warm and giddy all of a sudden. Alice looked so happy to see her, but put on the best smile she could for Tonya. Dana felt a sudden wave of guilt come through her body. She knew Alice had been drinking, she could see it in her eyes, and she knew that that fake smile was to hide how she really felt about Tonya. Alice looked down briefly to bite her lip because she had to feel physical pain. Seeing Dana hurt her so much, but she had to hide it. She had to pretend and it sucked. The gang chatted about their week, and talked about Dana’s upcoming tournament, and when it came time for talk of the wedding, Alice got up and excused herself for some air. She had made some comment about drinking too early, so she needed air. Alice went towards the patio to hide the tears that were about to fall. The night air felt so good, and there was a nice cold breeze that she needed to snap her out of this sadness. After a few minutes, Dana came up behind her and wanted to hold her so bad, but she couldn’t. Instead, she touched her shoulder… “Al…”
