Chapter II – Yes, I’m Ready

    Four months after Chapter I

When the bike and pedestrian paths that wound down from the GW Bridge got to the part of the Hudson River Park by the Chelsea neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, they skimmed past a series of converted piers, decaying and decrepit until the mid-1990s. An unexpected revelation now, the area was a secret of another side of the city that New Yorkers of every stripe tended to fall in love with over and over again once they’d rediscovered the Piers.

Whatever the season: summer, spring, winter, or fall, if you had it in you, and you could walk or jog the paths ‘til you got to Battery Park, you’d discover something about this part of the city that you didn’t know before. You’d be dazzled by the combination of a sparkling river running by your right, a collection of emerald green grassy knolls that sprouted now and again as you jogged or biked down the path, the sights and sounds of playgrounds filled with the sounds of children at play, street musicians you’d come across who’d been singing the blues or latest pop song, or smiles of people enjoying the sun or playing in the numerous fields and courts – images that coalesced in a mash-up of scenes set against that unique, gigantic line of skyscrapers of stone, glass, and steel, that crowded out the sky.

Jade kept her easy pace going, reveling in the sights and sounds of everything around her as she jogged by Pier 40, encouraging Rian to continue with her story after a lengthy silence had fallen between them, “So what did he say next?”

    Rian sighed, “Does it matter?”

“It must have, to him at least.”

    Another sigh.

“I’d broken his heart, Jade. He didn’t need to say that part out loud.”

“Did it make things worse after you’d said you were now with Dan?” Jade asked as she tamped down lingering feelings of her own disappointment. Ironic that Max and I share this feeling.

She blew a breath out as she heard Rian sigh again.

Maybe I should change the topic.

Before Rian answered, Jade said quickly, “Anyway … let’s go off-topic first. Like how thankful I still am about your advice,” she started.
