Chapter V – Empire State of Mind – A Dish Best Served Cold

He continued, brows knitted in concentration as he tried to remember the scene.

“But his conversation with the second caller seemed to be about other things. A file about number codes or something? Spencer seemed pretty shaken up after the second call whereas he was way more confident while he was on the first call, almost dismissive in tone, as he somewhat impatiently reported on what he and I had agreed, to the first caller.”

Scott looked at Bette curiously as Bette turned her thoughts inward, releasing him from her piercing glare that seemed to pin him to his chair as he’d talked.

She thought, that first call must have been the first guy who was pulling all the strings several months ago, and whom Spencer had said wanted to get his hands on a painting or paintings in an antique chest that Raoul had likely hid something in, and which Bette now had stored in a storage facility in a Freeport in Luxembourg.

And the second caller must have been one from the second group – the group that had staged the surprise attack on the first caller, who had hinted to Bette before being silenced that this second group would stop at nothing to get hold of Spencer. Judging by their actions, including attacking the convoy she and Spencer had been in, the first caller was not bluffing about this second group. Right now, this second group was still observing the truce she’d struck with them, when they’d gotten in touch with her after the attack on the convoy, which had killed Spencer.

For all his faults, Scott had just shared valuable information with her, though –including how much this second group seemed to value the puzzling series of codes in one of the folders earmarked for Bette’s eyes only in the cloud service. Information that Bette now possessed.

And, probably unbeknownst to this second group, Spencer had left a document in that file folder that told Bette that corroborating files and documents that would unlock what the series of codes meant were in the locked chest that Raoul had passed on to Bette for safekeeping.   In the will Raoul had left for her he described finding the papers amongst the things Nelle had left behind in the rooms she’d rented in Paris, when she’d been wrongfully picked up and thrown in jail for allegedly helping the retreating Germans.   All these had occurred in the confusing aftermath in Paris following the conclusion of the last world war. What did those papers contain? she wondered. Even Raoul hadn’t known.  But between what Spencer had collected, and the information in the papers, Bette felt she had all the pieces to this puzzle.  Soon, that second group could figure out what she had, too.  She’d have to act quickly while she had this advantage over them.

    1. Well, well, looks like Bette has Scott by his oversexed nuts! ” Um …what happened, man? You look shaken up …” I hope she makes Jodie pay for her nastiness too. It appears that Ms. Porter-Kennard is on a mission. Great update! I have looking forward to your post. Keep up the good work.
