Chapter XXVII – Empire State of Mind – An Equal and Opposite Reaction
Backing away from the women, playfully holding up his arms in front of him as if fearing for his life, he responded to their rapid-fire questions with, “… that’s why I never ask Robert Woo any questions when he asks me whether I’d like to join him in any investment in his neck of the woods. When he called me years ago to invest in this firm I did so without a second thought. He said I wouldn’t regret it. And if everything goes according to plan with this IPO, I guess I won’t!”
“So how much do you think you’ll clear when that IPO finally launches, Peter?” somebody from the circle of donors he’d been talking to called out.
“Not me, I keep telling you guys … my foundation! My foundation cleans up on this!” Peter exclaimed, as he continued to back away from the group. He nodded at Conrad, another lead partner in Jackson’s law firm, to silently signal to him to that Conrad could take over hosting duties from Peter, as they’d agreed earlier. Peter and Jackson were going to discuss the phone call Jackson had just completed – and the two of them would try to slip away to the dark library next to the living room to talk.
Jackson was waiting for Peter in the far corner of the dark library, standing next to the large desk, which Peter normally used for work when he was in Skydance. Jackson had switched on the antique lamp sitting on the corner of the desk: it was the solitary source of light in the otherwise dark, cavernous library.
“Did you find one of them?” Peter asked, without preamble, as he strode quickly to the desk.
“Yeah. It took several calls but I finally tracked her down. She was in Dulles, preparing to leave, so it’s a good thing I caught her at the airport before she left this area. We were really lucky, Peter. I think she’s the best of the lot that your friend Fleming hinted we look at,” Jackson answered crisply. His attitude was all-business as he swiped his finger across the mini-tablet that he’d pulled from inside a specially-tailored coat.
He tapped out his password and tapped on the app for the cloud the security firm guarding Peter had set up for him. He tapped out another password at the next prompt. After he put a search term in the box, a series of folders appeared on the screen. He double-tapped on one of the folders, and handed the mini-tablet to Peter when a PDF file opened.

So glad to see this story back!
More bette and tina NC-17 please
Thanks for the update, enjoyed it.
Wow Jules and Diane are not Bette and Tina but that was so hot! There are so many twists and turns and you never really know who to trust. I love it! Thanks for posting.
I’ve spent the last three weeks reading “Let It Happen”, “Love Soul Heaven Hell” and “Empire State of Mind”. I’m a sucker for a good love story and an even bigger one for a love story with mystery, action, and intrigue. I particularly enjoy FanFIction when the author takes the characters in directions different from the original series. I’ve enjoyed how Bette turns out to be some business genius, who is sought after by the world’s movers and shakers. Yet, despite her enormous success in the business world, art still plays and important role in her life, and her life with Tina. I am riveted by the connection between Bette and Tina throughout these stories. Despite their rocky start, their connection remains the axis upon which these stories revolve around. They’ve weathered former suiters, art thieves, fighting factions in a war zone, greedy gold thieves, and rogue intelligence agents, and their connection seems to grow stronger and stronger.
I also enjoy how you keep tying earlier scenes to the current plot line. It’s as if the first two stories laid out all the puzzle pieces and in the third story, we get to see how Bette finally puts all those pieces together. Clever, quite clever. I have a sneaking suspicion that her rescuer, Harry, from the caves, will eventually play a role in wrapping up this gold mystery. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out and whether you have another sequel planned for us. You have some crazy, mad skills as a writer, and I hope you continue to share those skills with your readers.
What can I say….. thanks for the read through! Glad to note the broad storyline “coheres” for you, the independent reader. I must confess there is a future arc I’ve written out, but still mulling over. Do let me know if it works (if I can manage to insert it before this one ends).
Welcome back Sky!! I was wondering what was happening with Tom. I hope the antidote will work for him. His Mom did I want a legacy for him( yes I know his legacy is Tina and Bette’s baby). Is the mystery killer the woman that Tom’s mom contacted. Philby has to be stopped. Glad to see Bette and Brom make up. Diane and Jules have to get married. Diane has to trust her heart. Jules only wants her. I love all the intrigue and backstory. Bette and Tina would be the best guardians for the gold and Peter’s fortune. Their big hearts and giving souls would make them the true protectors of the world. Keep this marvelous story coming with all its twists and turns. I love it!!
Oh my, I was blessed with 32 pages of bliss. My reward for threatening the life of his first born if, my computer tech could not fix my computer, in a timely manner. He was instructed to fix it now or die trying. Discussion on phone that could have started an International incident. But, he did, and I read and reread my reward. Very much worth probably the beginning of WWIII! The episode is amazing and everything is coming together as a good novelist desires. Maybe, Diane should speak with Tina about jumping into forever with J. Tina had somewhat of the same concerns as Diane. And look how well that turned out! Please keep writing and I will try not to threaten the life of anyone else!
