Chapter XXX – Empire State of Mind – That Which We Are

In anticipation of everything that she envisioned would shortly be happening, Bette had asked the advice of various tech experts, including Arvind, as well as clients of Diane, about cloud services. The search for someone to build what she wanted had been surprisingly quick, and in short order, she’d narrowed her list to a few bonafide geniuses.

The one that blew her away had been the most unassuming one. He was so humble he’d ridden a bike to their duplex and said he’d booked himself in a youth hostel.  Bette knew, though, that the young man was not lacking in resources since his patents had garnered him millions in patent fees already, despite his youth.

Tina remembered snatches of the conversation between Bette and the young man on a balmy Wednesday evening. He and Bette were standing over the grill in the terrace, and Bette had gotten to her list of questions regarding security in clouds.

“Well firstly, I can create this massive cloud, and program several programs that will be able to self-maintain automatically. One feature I could program in is to allow you to open everything in an orderly way … open every file you’ve ever created, if you wanted to,” he’d started to explain, demonstrating with his hands, making shapes in the air as he spoke. “It would be a really cool thing and one someone like you would like, if you don’t mind my guessing.”

Before Bette could ask her questions about security, again, he’d quickly continued, “Now, my solution to security will be simple. In the unlikely event that someone breaches security, the system will reconfigure itself, and put in a new code, well before anything can be read or taken by the intruder. Because the way I’ll build this thing will be almost like genetics — creating a program is like creating a gene you know.”

Bette had looked at him with a mix of surprise and awe. Neither of the two other geniuses in her list had explained this to her in this way. In fact, a lot of what they’d said had been incomprehensible.

But before Bette could respond, he’d continued in a confident tone, “There’re only about six people in the world that I know who can do this, and that includes me. The system will be coded to you Bette. Not even I will be able to break it. Can’t mess with genetics, after all.”

    1. Amazing story! I love how Tina is able to support Bette in all this. She is one strong woman.

Please keep Bette save. She has endured enough in her life.

    2. oh goody a little update, I am still following closely along. Why can’t Bette drag Miller along for protection. She knows of her worth and by now Miller must know how important it is to ensure Bette’s mission for everyone. Please keep going!!!
