Christmas Present
James stood in the door of Bette’s office, a look of sadness on his face. He wished his boss and friend wasn’t so stubborn. No, that’s not right, he corrected himself. It may look like stubbornness, but he knew that
more than anything else it was her fear that held her back from having all she desired.
“Why don’t you go home,” he said softly, not wanting to startle her.
Bette took a deep breath, not looking up. Damn. She knew James wouldn’t let her hide in her office too much longer without trying to get her to leave one more time. She had been staring at her computer screen for hours, working on projects that she normally wouldn’t even have started until the next semester.
It was a way to get through the evening, not a very healthy way, but one of the few choices acceptable to her.
“I will soon, I promise,” she said, finally looking into the concerned eyes of her loyal assistant and friend. “Go home James, there’s no reason for you to be here.”
“But, your…” he started before Bette interrupted. “I’m working on extracurricular projects, nothing that needs your assistance. And you know as well as I do that there won’t be any business calls or last minute
meetings that will need your attention.” Bette stood up and walk around her desk, resting her hands on James’s shoulders. “It’s Christmas Eve James, school’s closed for the holiday…go home to your family.”
It was James’s turn to take a deep breath. “You could…”
“I’m fine,” Bette said more firmly. “I’m only going to work for a little while longer, and then I’ll go see Kit and Michael.”
“You promise?” James asked, not believing for a minute Bette would drive across town to visit her newlywed sister and brother in law one day after they’d returned from a honeymoon in Australia. Bette had commented often enough about Kit’s notorious jet lag for him to know she would wait for Kit to make first contact. But, the look on her face begged him not to call her on this little lie.
“I promise,” Bette smiled. She leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his cheek. “Go on, I’m sure Gary will be pacing by now, wondering why you’re not there yet.”
