Come Back to Me – Bette Porter Tina Kennard #4

    <!–nextpage–>

Then it all happened in slow motion. Franklin and his mustachioed prince are saying goodbye. I shake hands with Leo who says something appropriate about fathers and daughters and then Franklin takes my hand. His is too soft, too effete, too unnatural as if he had just wiped it on his jacket before touching mine.

What a fucking poser I look into his eyes with veiled loathing. He murmurs something about how he didn’t expect Gloria Steinem to be here which irritates me for two reasons. First, why the fuck not? Is that some kind of deeply coded racism of his? And secondly because I didn’t either and was blindsided when she walked in here thirty minutes ago but as I’ve realized lately – I’ve been shroaded in an unremitting fog for months on end. Underscored by the incredible blindness of mine to have missed Tina’s pregnancy – something so obvious now that I watch her across the room. She smiles and winks at me. My attention is pierced as this argument with Franklin goes in a very different direction.

“The board will buy out your contract, of course.” And then he fucking fires me at my father’s memorial.

“I’ll review clauses later, Franklin, because now I’d like to murder someone! Maybe you?” I snap at him as Leo backs  toward the door. Franklin releases my hand with a smirk, the door closes and they are gone.

<!–nextpage–>My hands vibrate as the desire to choke the life out of something ignites with the vodka lazing around in my blood. It rushes all at once straight through the throbbing vein in my neck and into my brain.

“Bette?” Finally, Tina’s next to me. Unbelievable. Her timing.

“You know, Goddammit. Where have you been?” I finish my drink in a long swallow. Fresh troops coming.

“Around. There are a lot of people I know here.” Everyone’s excited about the baby.” She slips her arm through mine and threads her hand through mine.

“Tina, let go of my hand. I have to go kill Franklin and Leo.”

“Babe, I’m sorry. I saw you getting furious with them. What just happened? Come here. Come to Kit’s office.” She pulls on me with both arms.

“No! You fucking let go. Tell me what the baby’s name is so I’ll know before I leave for prison.” I pry her fingers away from mine.

    1. Amazing writing. I remember how heartless Franklin was …..firing Bette at her father’s memorial. What a jerk! Just an empty suit. I may be in the minority but I did not think that Bette was super controlling. She knew what she wanted, how she wanted it and was willing to work toward that end. The birth scene was terrifying. All of the control was in the doctor’s hands. Bette felt and was helpless. I just loved Bette and Tina together. The actors had amazing chemistry together even when Chaiken’s writing was subpar.

    2. Franklin had an axe to grind. He tried to fire Bette when she failed to get the Peabody collection for Provocations but was stopped by Peggy. He took great pleasure in firing Bette on her father’s memorial day and knowing that she had a baby on the way. It was not one of Helena’s finest moments either. Excelling writing as usual.

    3. What a repulsive cretin Franklin was, and his timing for Bette’s dismissal was diabolical. Of course it pales in comparison to burying one’s father and having one’s partner and baby being whisked away under the harsh lighting of an OR, but still.

      Thanks for posting.

    4. Franklin, Leo and Helen for that matter are pure assholes out with jeslousy over the one and only Bette Porter. Franklin mad because shes brilliant, Leo wish he was brilliant like her, and Helena is jealous of the brilliance and her brilliance life with Tina…the baby being born makes me tense up for some reason seems like alot of pain…Amazing writing

    5. As with the previous posts, I was utterly mesmerised at the chain of events in this post.

My heart bleeds for Bette as she is fired and then Tina is in labour and if not for Dr Wilson, she may have missed Anjelica’s birth.

Once again I was there in the emergency room watching it all.

What an incredibly gifted writer you are.
