Cornucopia ~ Chapter 6 ~ Thanksgiving Wednesday (Part Two of Four)

    Wednesday, September 26, 2008

When Bette picked up the phone, Tina was already in mid-rant.

“I can’t believe this.  I could give them the choice of coming in on Friday to finish up, except I want to stay at home on Friday,” Tina foamed behind the closed door in her office.

“Do any of them have to travel?”

    “No. All local.”

“You‘re the boss and can tell them what to do.”

“I know that, Bette,” Tina snapped.  “Can’t I call you just to vent.”

Bette counted to five, so that she would not be irritated when she replied.  She had been in Tina’s position and understood the dilemma of preventing your team from leaving at the company’s early closing time on a holiday eve.

“T, how did you feel when it happened to you?”

“Irked, but I got over it.”

“Will you be able to enjoy Thanksgiving with this unfinished?”

    “No.”

“Isn’t it likely your staff feels the same way?”

    “Maybe.”

“How late are you keeping them?”

“An hour or so past regular closing time.”

    “That’s not that bad.”

    “I guess.”

Tina switched the subject. “Did Angelica eat her special omelet this morning?” she teased.

“No, though she happily watched as I ate it.”

    “Poor baby.”

“We could try putting the cereal in scrambled eggs.”

“Baby, you’ve already gone above and beyond.”

“That omelet was vile.  We really should try sushi.”

    “Bette!”

Tina took a different school bus home on Wednesday because she was going straight to her grandmother’s to join in the holiday cooking.  A friend had saved her a seat and glared, on Tina’s behalf, when the usual occupant began to object.

The stop was only one street away from her destination, but Tina walked slowly.  She was eager to arrive, but she was also savoring the anticipation of the fun she would have with the family women.  She was also enjoying imagining how surprised the entire family would be when she presented the family’s special pie for dessert after Thanksgiving dinner.

When she had arrived, Tina stood outside the side door that opened into the kitchen, listening to her mother, grandmother and aunts working together, whining and teasing each other.  She smiled knowing that when she opened the door, she would step into a place of comfort and love.

    1. Hey there, thx so much for this. Always enjoy your stories and I’m learning, like the NY Public Library-over here u just have to go sort your own books out unless u make a request to the National Library or to a University Library.Like the names of the Lions. And cereal actually doesn’t have much nutritional value so maybe Bette and Tina could make Angie a nice smoothie with berries, yoghurt and an an egg for protein-no need to tell her about the egg though. Just a thought. PPS

    2. I love the flashbacks with Tina’s family. Bette’s family (Or should I say Kit and David) seems full of sadness. I can’t wait for the next post.

    3. hey don’t get me wrong here but if time permits and the creative flow comes through, a nice story similar to this one but without the flashbacks, with B & T would be fun to read, not that this one isn’t.

    4. ”I have taken some Liberties when writing this story” – So you’re wearing a big copper dress that’s turning green, w 7-spikes on yer head and carrying a big book and a torch?… interesting… ;-)

    5. So paths crosses without the travelers necessarily meeting? OK. Too bad Bette didn’t disembark in NY, with that mouth she would have fit right in. Inspired and colorful insults are an ancient art form there. I daresay I’ve gotten off a few good ones there myself. At about the time of the flash backs I worked across 5th Ave. from the library and in warm weather I’d join the masses of office workers to have lunch on the steps and terraces out front near the lions. It usually was a nice break but there was that time 2 men were arguing, one on the terrace above me and the other below, about the man above’s wife. I was grateful when they moved along, taking the argument farther across the steps with them. I’m not a parent, but I was a finicky eater as a child. I’d have to tell Bette to skip the sushi. Not much shelf life with that.
