Cries Of The Mass – Chapter 2

Tina felt the nurse’s gentle pulling. She felt the woman bringing her closer to the inevitable disenheartment. Beyond the closed doors, she knew lay Bette in whatever mangled state the crash had left her.

Mechanical beeps washed over her as she crossed that lonely threshold. Tina’s heart fell to the polished floor and shattered. The sight before her was insufferable. The exert to remain standing suffocated Tina and she felt immeasurable tides of lament begin to surface.

The eyes that habitually gleamed now lay empty and unexpressive; hidden beneath afflictive lids. The skin that was natively bronzed presently sat icy and blanched. The slender fingers that had so often animated Tina’s desise were now disfigured; leaning awkwardly against the white sheets.

Tina stared through the blur at the broken contours of her ex’s beautiful face. She took in the numerous tubes and the several wires. She gazed in despair at the machines pumping life into the motionless body.

She found herself at Bette’s side, in a chair she’d not noticed. Her heavy lids – weighed down with prognosticating despondency – barely blinked as she looked on, forlorn; begging for a sign from Bette.

With the medical jargon and her own impervious vexation, she remained ignorant to many details.

She became vaguely aware of another presence. Lifting her head, feeling the full downward force of her emotions, she stared blankly in the face of Jodi Lerner. The woman Bette had fought for. The prize that drew Bette from her side in LA..

She prepared for her body’s hateful convulsion. But it never came. Her opponent stood at the open door, her face mimicking the same sentiments Tina currently felt coursing through her veins. She watched as the other contestant in the battle for the Porter heart visibly broke down before her.

She rose from her seat and embraced the scared deaf girl. The two clung to one another’s desperate beings; feeling the fresh light of mutual respect and both simultaneously wishing their love back to them.
