Day: Thursday; Time: Morning; Place: LAX (Time of Day 20)

Bette gripped the handle of the bag too tightly, she realized, as she strolled through the airport. How long ago had she made this trip? Two weeks? A lifetime?

She could hear the voice of Alice asking if she was the dean, didn’t that mean she could afford flying out a day or two early.

The dean could afford it monetarily, but the dean’s schedule was not as forgiving. Still, she snuck away a day early and would be in upstate New York on Thursday evening.

    To what purpose?

‘You better not break my heart.’

She could hear the words that Jodi spoke as Bette gave her the sign.

Everything seemed so clear, then. At the time the focus was on winning – on winning Jodi back.

But to what end? To trade weekends cross-country? Would Jodi settle for living in southern California?

    Would Jodi settle?

A part of Jodi was so exciting. The artist. The creator. The one for whom all was art, and all should be done magnificently.

    Art done Jodi’s way.

A curator with her private artist-in-residence. What could be a more perfect pairing?

Yet Jodi had rejected her. Jodi had cut off communication, unwilling to, again, settle for the ordinary in apologies.

At the foremost, Bette realized that to proceed with Jodi meant deferring to Jodi.

Upon Tina’s advice, she deferred to Jodi.

How long before the deference became grating? How long before the need to assert overwhelmed the need to be together?

Bette had to think that Tina didn’t set her up to fail, but if she thought it all through, did Tina know how difficult it would be for her to sustain this mindset?

Not that Bette minded doing things that others desired, at least, not for certain individuals. But those individuals should also realize that it’s a two-way street. Deferring to Jodi’s wishes also meant that, at times, Jodi should defer to Bette.

Would that happen? Had that happened?

Jodi said she didn’t like children. That was the deal breaker. She relented.

Jodi said she didn’t do monogamy. Another deal breaker. Again, she relented.

But the dinner party, the communication. How will such things go in the future? Bette didn’t feel like she could always sit back and let Jodi miss what was happening, especially at a party in Jodi’s honor.

That’s where it began to get hard. Letting Jodi set the pace for sex, that was easy. Having Jodi decide to top her in bed, that provided some excitement to what had been the status quo.

But missing in those exchanges was some of the ways that Bette would pamper Tina, take care of Tina, when they were together. Even when Bette was the receptor, there was still something to giving to and doing for Tina at those times.

And now Tina was present. Available. Seemingly willing.

All those damn clues that Tina had been leaving. The touches. The looks. The kisses that went on for just a little too long.

All of that came secondary to winning. Winning and deference.

And now, the airport, and the memory of being told to not break a heart.

Jodi had told her that she loved her.

Tina had told her that she loved her.

Bette knew that she loved each of them.

She also knew that she was truly only in love with one.

And here she was, Thursday morning, at the airport.

It would be so easy to get on the plane.

It would be so easy to go back home, back to Tina.

    Damn.

    (the end)

    1. Can’t believe I’m first – first to say – I kinda like the short chapters – you can pack a lot of emotion into a few lines. I appreciate your writing and your setting Bette up to say what she really wants!!

    2. Short chapters are good for this story. I should get back to writing even if its just short chapters.I am glad you keep posting even if its short chapters.Maybe you will be my inspiration to get back to writing again.

    3. I like the shorter chapters, especially since you seem to find time to give us something despite being busy. I would not want to be Bette right now.

    4. finally someone else (besides me) sees that the battle that must me waging within Bette. All the sites think Bette “got her spine back this season,” or whatever. This portrayal is way more on the money. It was about compensating for the losses, that’s what Jodie was and is. Taht’s why they call them the rebound, you go down so you need something to go back up. And so you make compromises and act outside your real self. But does it last? Can’t wait to see your take Pseud, even if it’s piece by tiny piece!PPS

    5. Can’t wait until Bette actually makes a move. Things with Jodi, ehh, it just comes off as too hard for too little. I definitely got the winning her vibe.. as in that was what was important at the time. Since I didn’t see any hints of Bette being in love with her. But, I will wait until the next installment.

    6. I agree with gigi1976 that Jodi is Bette’s rebound. She behaved in a way that wasn’t like the Bette we were used to. She cried, she was vulnerable, and she was clearly scared to date again. I agree that short chapters goes for this story. They’re just enough to keep things interesting and not too long to drag things down. I’m glad that Bette decided to leave a day early and that she realizes that she’s in love with someone and it aint Jodi. Hopefully she won’t back down when she goes there and will tell Jodi what’s happened in the weeks she’s been back in WeHo. I wonder though did Bette leave Tina a message or have Alice do it for her? We’ve gotta get a POV from Tina’s side on this. Thanks for all the quick updates Pseud. Awesomely written as always.

    7. Short doesn’t equal empty by any means. Sometimes short can be quite pungent. But I’m sorry, I can’t quite see Bette’s dithering as I’ve never been able to see Jodi as anything worth getting excited about, rebound or not. (Don’t worry, I understand that you’re working with what you’re given.) I know we’re supposed to find her exciting and entrancing, but (sorry Marlee) she’s been neither as depicted on screen, which colors what we find in FF land. So I say “Lassie, go home!”

    8. I agree with Speed Racer…we need to get Tina’s POV…clearly, this is something you excel at…reference: Plan B…have I ever mentioned how annoyed I was with you (OK…not really, I’m not a psycho) when you ended that story… it still is one of my favorites!

    9. Pseud, “Damn” is the perfect expression of how I am feeling after reading this latest chpater. It was wonderful to read that Tina is back on Bette’s mind as a potential life partner. Trouble is so is Jodi. Personally I think that Bette and Tina belong together. Jodi was an ideal interim lover interest. SHe helped Bette reenter the romantic realm but now Bette needs to determine who is best for her. Who will support and comfort her. Who will allow her to be herself. Who will lead and let her lead when the time is right. Who will demand the best from her. Who will give her freedom and automony. Who completes her mind, body and soul. Who fills her heart completely. This has been a rollercoaster ride and there is more to come. Thank you so much for this fabulous fan fiction. Your Loyal Fan.

    10. I’m happy with your posts whatever the length, especially when you pack so much in them. Deference and humility are all very well and fine when you’re so awestruck by your love for someone that you’d do anything for them… But with Jodi, Bette comes across more as submissive, and I don’t think she can keep that up for long. I’m curious to see how she handles Jodi. Great writing as usual, pseud. Thanks

    11. Great as always. Your characterization is true, and that’s only one of the many things I enjoy about your stories. Thanks for the diversion.

    12. We like you stories short or long. I like this little tibit you give us every other day or so. Its amazing how you get in they’re heads. Tina, Bette, just get your booty home to the one you truly love and who loves you.

    13. I like chapters period. As much as I want Bette and Tina together Bette maybe should go on to NY and break Jodi’s heart. Sorry that is my dream for Bette and Tina.
