“I guess I wanted to catch you off guard,” Bette replied. “I didn’t want to give you a chance to think.”

“Well, I had to give myself a chance to think,” Tina said.

    “And…?”

Tina finally got the nerve to look Bette in the eye. “Would you like to come over for dinner on Friday night?”

Bette smiled and nodded in the affirmative as a server approached their table.

    Chapter 2

“Can I offer you anything else?” Tina asked. She then added as an afterthought. “For dinner I mean.”

“No, thanks, that was delicious,” Bette replied with a smile while setting her napkin beside her plate.

Tina silently picked up the wine bottle and topped up Bette’s glass.

“Let’s take our wine to the living room,” Tina stood and waited for Bette to follow her.

As Tina walked past the sofa, she arranged two coasters on the surface of the coffee table. It was clearly her intention that they would be sharing the sofa.

Bette found it disconcerting that Tina was so very assertive in her actions. Perhaps she had underestimated her.

They settled in, facing each other.

“What’s the story with you and Alice?” Tina asked. “There seems to be more than a friendship there.”

“Astute observation,” Bette replied, taking a sip from her glass before setting it down. “We actually dated for a short time.”

“And you’re the one who ended it,” Tina stated.

“Technically I did, but it was really a mutual understanding,” Bette explained.

“Okay, you keep telling yourself that,” Tina said, shaking her head.

“What? She knows we’re better off as friends,” Bette defended her position.

“She’ll get there,” Tina started. “But she’s not there yet.”

Bette was speechless at the fact Tina had verbalized what she had silently feared since she had ended her relationship with Alice. She finally found the words to speak again.

“She’s a great person…one of my best friends,” Bette said. “But you know whether or not there’s a chance of something being long term. Best for everyone if you act as soon as you know.”

    “Minimizes hurt feelings,” Tina offered.

“I know she was still hurt,” Bette conceded. “But she hides it well to maintain our friendship. To get to the point where we’re really friends again.”

    1. Great one Swimmie. Although you say its the end, we hope not but we understand if it is. Just happy to see you back with something because it is always good when you give us something else to read and ponder. Hope you bring us something else. Thanks for posting Swimmie.

    2. Hey JKS, Please say this isn’t the end. For me this is just the beginning of a wonderful relationship and one I really want you to write. Please make it so. Your Appreciative, Grateful and Loyal Fan.

    3. Why would you make it the end if it was only the beginning???? you can write more than that. And the fact that we want more is a more reason for you to consider it. Thank you & have a great day

    4. (the end.) ??? …Are you kidding me? What’s up with you and Pseud? You must know I love everything you write, but you two are taking me to the edge and dropping me off with these abrupt endings. Is this a writer thing that I wouldn’t understand? Nevertheless, I loved the brief moments of fictive bliss I had while reading this. Thank you, JKS.

    5. Your take on Tina seems more in line with the Tina that originally met Bette. It is also the Tina that we saw in season 5. Somewhere along the 5th to 7th year of their relationship Tina disappeared. Thanks for the short story.

    6. Hey…what’s the deal…are you and pseud in cahoots JKS? What….is this tease the loyal followers week? I sure hope there’s more to this story in the form of another chapter or sequel.
