    First, Last, & Forever? (Version 2.0 – Chapter 18)

    CHAPTER 18

Tina could do nothing but watch as Bette disappeared beneath the water’s rippling surface.

“Shit.  That did not come out right.”  Tina cursed at herself, instantly recognizing that she should have found a better way to express what was on her mind.

Tina was glued to her spot, her body completely paralyzed, as she waited for Bette to resurface.  She felt horrible that she had allowed Helena to intrude on their intimacy.  She couldn’t even understand why something as simple as Bette kissing her neck had driven her back to the memory of that night.  Tina knew that what had happened between her and Helena was a necessary step in her finding her way home.  But, she still felt guilty for leaving Bette in the first place, and the memories of her time with Helena would always be the greatest reminders of that colossal mistake.

Bette sat on the bottom of the pool, tears blending with the chlorinated water.  She knew she should hear Tina out before allowing the dragon’s ghost to upset her this way.  She tried to hold to the idea that Helena was nothing more than a ghost to them now.

“Fuck!” she screamed, knowing her cry would be muffled by the three feet of water above her.  Bette knew rationally that she had nothing to worry about.  Tina had chosen her over Helena.  But she couldn’t stop her heart from pounding, couldn’t silence the fear settling in her stomach.  Bette remained in her safe underwater haven until her lungs betrayed her.

As she broke the surface, she kept her back to Tina, refusing to meet the gaze she felt burning into her back.  Bette recognized the irony that she now stood in front of Tina, not just half-naked physically, but emotionally.  She walked the few remaining feet to the pool steps and climbed out, taking shelter in one of the soft towels lying on the nearby table.  She draped the towel over her head and shoulders, covering her face with the soft terry cloth.

Bette made her way to the lounge chair where she had only minutes ago been cuddled up with Tina, discussing the direction of her career.  She sat on the end of the chair, legs firmly pressed together, her elbows propped up on her knees.  She buried her face in her hands, still hiding beneath the soft shelter of the Egyptian cotton beach towel.

    1. That was ahard chapter for Bette to hear but she needed to understand Tina’s feelings about what had happened. I’m glad it ended well for them. Great work Steph.PPS

    2. I like your explanation of Tina’s and Helena’s relationship, Steph. I think you’re right that Tina tried to love Helena, but wasn’t free to do so. Love the story.

    3. Ahhh wow, that was a hard one for sure. You were brave in your honesty, when you wrote how difficult it is to move forward if you don’t honestly reveal some painful moments. In order for Bette to really accept Tina back completely, to trust their relationship, and move forward, she unfortunately is needing to hear the ghosts of the past. Tina, knowing that what she will reveal has the potential of only hurting Bette more, hesitates, because she hates to pull so much of the pain to the surface. While she struggles to offer enough to satisfy Bette’s curiousity, Bette wants every detail. Wow, I’ve been in a similar situation, and all I’ll say is you really have written this brilliantly. It’s very true to life. If you cannot move forward with full honesty with one another, you will fail and you will crumble. Sometimes making that road smooth again, isn’t about finding the right detour, but rolling your sleeves up and putting alot of work into making the road you will travel together, safer, stroner, and more secure. Thanks Steph. Ready for the next one!!! : -)))

    4. Very good communication skills used in this scene. It could have gone in totally different direction but both allowed the other their own thoughts. That is a very good step in the right direction.

    5. Great chapter, I love that you are making these two actually face their demons, hard in the short term but it’s got to be benficial in the long term.
