    Freedom Fest

“What?  What is it?”  Howie asked impatiently practically laying across Dana’s lap in an attempt to read the invitation.

“I um…it is an invitation to The Planet.”  Dana continued to stare at the invitation.

“The Planet?”  Howie gave her a confused look.  “That’s the coffee shop you used to always go to in college.  Why are you invited there?”

“I’m not sure.  It’s something called The Planet Reunion.”  Dana wasn’t sure what the invitation meant or why she received it.

“When is it?”  Howie asked expectantly.  His curiosity had gotten the best of him and now he was being nosey.  He wanted all of the details now.

“It’s in a month.  Apparently the same weekend as Freedom Fest and there are Freedom Fest tickets too.”  Dana continued staring at the invitation and tickets searching for an explanation.

    (Present Day)

Dana remembered the multiple sleepless nights she had after receiving the envelope.  She would toss and turn wondering who sent the invitation, why she received it, and whether or not she should go.  LA was a large part of her life, but it was in the past.  Now she was living in San Diego.  It had been six years since she graduated college and two years to the weekend since she had been in LA.  Yes she had friends in LA that she still talked to, but even those had been limited.  In fact she hadn’t talked to anyone in LA since she received the invitation.  It had been over 3 months since she talked to Shane.  She kept in touch with all of her friends for a short time after she left, either through email or on the phone.  But as time passed the calls and emails became fewer and farther between until they just kind of stopped.  Dana blamed herself.  She knew her friends tried, but she just didn’t feel like talking.  She figured they finally grew tired of leaving messages that were rarely returned.  She didn’t mean to push them away she just didn’t know what else to do.  Now she sat alone outside of The Planet wondering why she decided to come to LA for the weekend.

“I take it you received my invitation.”  A voice said quietly beside Dana.

    1. you scared the shit out of me at first. I thought it was an anthrax envelope. You know they used to be mailed with no return address on the envelopes. Please, by all means, don’t do that again. But you do get points for suspense.
