    Great Unexpectations Chapter 35

    Previously…

Cora turned back to Bette and Tina. Correctly fearing the worst, she weakly dropped the pepper-spray to the floor. Richard slowly walked up behind her, still keeping himself between Cora and the door. "Honey", Tina said, stepping nervously toward her. "I’m so sorry to have to tell you this. Your mom…she died."

Cora stood in a stupor. Her ears filled with an annoying hum while the lights faded from the room. Before it went completely dark she saw Bette lunging for her with an outstretched arm. And she heard Bette call, "Richard!"

    Chapter 35.

Standing at home plate, bat in hand, eleven year old Cora nervously awaited the next pitch. A little league softball game with everything riding on what happened next. The score was fourteen to thirteen (little league scores had a way of getting atrocious fast) with a runner on third base. This was the typical "bottom of the ninth" situation, except in little league they only played seven innings. The roar of the parents in the bleachers was deafening. And above all else, Cora could hear her mother. "Come on Cora!! You can do it!! Eye on the ball!!"

She did as her mother said and kept her eye on the ball. She watched as it left the pitchers hand and soared two feet above her head, as many little league pitches tend to do. She did not swing. "Ball two!", cried the umpire.

The stands roared with applause. Cora stepped out of the batter’s box while the pitcher received a visit from her coach. She looked into the stands and smiled at her mother. These games were the only times they were able to pretend they were "normal". Her father, thankfully, was at work. He never made it to the games, thus never inflicted his anger and disappointment at her if she struck out. Faye and Cora had an agreement that if he asked about her games, which he rarely did, they would regale him of her on-field heroics, real or imagined. He’d be none the wiser. After all, the Wall Street Journal did not report little league box scores. Cora sunned her face and continued to smile into the stands. Her mother smiled back and stood, clapping. The action slowed to half speed as Cora dreamily looked around. Every movement hampered by the unseen force of nostalgia. The action slowed by half again. The coach walked away from the pitcher’s mound at a snails pace amid the muffled, blankety sound of the crowd. Cora looked to her mother again. Ever smiling, Faye slowly brought her hands together…

    1. Oooh, Richard so had that coming. He’s been taking way too many liberties, and that should put him right, the idiot. I really like how well Tina did with Cora. Bette’s right to be proud. Thanks for the post + have fun in the sun, red. cheers!

    2. Wonderful chapter and so happy Tina was able to comfort Cora to some extent, just hope she does not run away from them before hearing everything. So glad that Bette helped Richard learn to keep his damned mits off Tina. She is totally and completely off limits t him and anyone else. No matter how justified and innocent he thinks his actions are. I’m sure Tina will also break his left testicle when she gets the opportunity as well. As grown up as Cora thinks she is she still needs to listen to them and take their advice about protecting her from all the dangerous people looking for her. Have a great time in Florida and come back with reneewed vigor and we wait with great anticipation for the next chapters. Post when you can.

    3. Have fun in the sunny state of Florida, just hope those tornados stay away. The Tigers look ready to go. Bette sure let Richard know that Tina was off limits to him. He is lucky that Bette did not remove his eyes or cut off his hand.

    4. I am so glad that Tina was able to reach Cora. I hope that Bette and Tina can help her through the rough time ahead. Richard had every bit of Bette’s punishment to him coming and probably then some. I hope he realizes that is actually a small price to pay for the disrespect he showed both Tina and Bette. Fantastic chapter!

    5. “The pain was just a bonus.” Love that! Can’t blame Richard for his attraction to Tina, but gotta love Bette for showing her kick-ass side. Powerful emotions with another wonderful chapter. Enjoy your time in Florida. I don’t know where the Tigers train, but I’m in Naples and the weather could not be better! Look forward to seeing where you take Cora and the story.

    6. I tell ya…don’t mess with Bette! I guess Richard had to learn the hard way. Glad to see that Tina was able to give Cora some comfort. Let’s just hope she sticks around long enough to talk to them. Great chapter.

    7. You go Bette let Rich know who in is charge. Hopefully Tina comforting Cora will make her feel safe enough to stick around long enough to hear everything she need to about her mom and the danger from her father. Please let her feel the love and trust B&T to help her get out of the world she has been living in. I hope Richard learned his lesson and gets back to business before he lets her fathers people get the chance to find Cora.

    8. Another fantastic chapter Red! I love this story and can’t wait until you get back so you can send us some more! Loved the line about the pain just being a bonus – Richard should know better than to get touchy feely with Bette’s woman! Mooooore please please please???!!!!
