As time grew nearer for Francesca’s departure to Italy it was getting harder for Bette to let go of the strong bond they’d developed during the pregnancy. Although they shared a love and affection their feelings were not romantic. However the separation anxiety was exacerbated by the fact that Marcus had left for his two year tour, Tina had gone back to working sixteen hour days at the studio, and Peggy, Kit and Helena were occupied with their own lives and projects. With everyone in the household gone for most of the day, barely taking time to share a meal or have a conversation Bette and Francesca only had each other for company and caring for Alex.
Alex’s strong resemblance to Francesca and his slightly darker skin tone that matched Bette’s led people to assume that they were a couple and Alex their son. Francesca didn’t care if people thought she was gay. She found it flattering to be paired with such a beautiful woman as Bette. However she always set the record straight even though few believed there was nothing romantic going on between them. Bette on the other hand didn’t feel the need to explain or defend their relationship. She knew only too well how incestuous the lesbian community in West Hollywood could be and how easy it was to give legs to damaging rumors by reacting to them. Bette knew how it must appear to outsiders that her relationship with Francesca was something more than friendship but she refused to have it tainted. Bette’s heart belonged to only one woman; Tina Kennard and nothing would diminish that. But Francesca held a place there too. In spite of the innuendos she freely expressed her ‘friend love’ for the woman who had given birth to her child, proved to be a trusted friend and brought so much joy to her life. Besides that with Marcus gone Bette, Peggy and the rest of the gang were the only family Francesca had in the states.

Bette decided that Francesca’s birthday would be the perfect occasion to surprise her with the Maxx Wolffe paintings that she’d brought back from the cabin. When Francesca heard that Maxx’s collection would be on exhibit at the Hammer Museum for the “Maxine Wolff and Allyn Barnes Side by Side Retrospective” she’d told Bette that she would fly back to Los Angeles in the spring just to see it. That really touched Bette’s heart.

Oh my stars, please throw someone else into the mix for kate to be with. she does not need to be close to Tina at this time, Tina is too vulnerable. Bette is also too close to Francesca at the moment and needs to start cutting ties to her since it is intefering with bette and Tinas relationship. Im sure kate arranged things so that Tina wuld have to be on set all the time. Tin needs to check that out and back off from her schedule just a bit so she can spnd time with her family. Great chapter and thanks for posting.

A little drama is good for the story. Tina was looking at her situation w/rose-colored glasses when she first became involved w/Bette. She was hormonally speaking. Bette is correct in that if she moves back to WeHo, she will be by herself while Tina is working absurd hours. It seems like a power struggle between the two of them. Two alpha women, something’s gotta give.
They are both passive aggressive. Tina is trying to be more autonomous and alpha, not letting Bette’s powerful personality overshadow her. Bette is correct in that if she moved to WeHo she would not have people around her and be w/Alex 24/7. They are having a bit of a power struggle right now. Dram-Mama

I know I said I would stay away from commenting but I just can’t help myself :-). I really tried not to take Bette’s side this time but it’s just not possible. Of course Tina is in a difficult situation, but she should have known from the start what she was getting into as Bette shared her plans with her honestly. Relationships are about communication and often compromises and at the moment it seems that Tina isn’t willing to do either. Instead of telling Bette her feelings and insecurities she falls back into a passive-aggressive behavior and always changing the subject instead of just coming out and telling Bette how she feels about their situation. In addition she is not willing to make any compromises regarding her career and using Kate as an excuse for furthering her career. Personally I am more worried about Kate than I ever were about Francesca. So happy to see you post so regularly and thanks again for sharing this exceptional story.

I was going to agree with the first post that they both are idiots untill that last paragraph. The only idiot is the one who is not having problems getting intimate back rubs from an ex. I am not sure at this point if Tina as family oriented as Bette.
Tina is so wrong. She went into this relationship with her eyes wide open, and for her to lash out about Bette’ relationship with Francesca is so wrong. Bette is not trying to do anything but be supportive of Tina and her career, but instead of her talking about her feelings she Is being passive aggressive. I know she is vulnerable but when she realized it was Kate’s hands on her she Should have said you need to leave. Period! As far as far as the dance contest goes Tina needs to pull the stick out of her butt and let Bette have some fun. Everyone thinks that Bette and Francesca are a couple but Bette does not confirm or deny, but Francesca always corrects the assumption and she is straight. What does Tina have to worry about? Nothing! PPS
