    Chapter 14 / “Are you drunk?”

    CHAPTER 14

    Teresa stared at the clock on the bottom right corner of her monitor. The fucking day had turned to shit and she still had to make it over to the parking garage by the airport.. It never seemed to end, the laundry list of people that needed something from her. The only person in her life who seemed to not want something was Tina. Long after she had left Tina’s apartment, the conversation they had replayed in her mind. And as she cared for her niece and nephew – played with them and tucked them into bed – she allowed her mind to drift to the possibility of having her own family, something she had never considered with any real levity until a certain reporter walked into her life.

    "Superintendent?"

    "Yes."

    "I have a Tina Kennard on line 1"

    "Thank you, Brenda. Can you please shut my door?"

    Teresa waited for the click of door before picking up the phone,

    "I was just thinking about you." Teresa leaned back in her chair and absentmindedly clicked her pen.

    "Oh yeah? Happy thoughts I hope."

    "Of course. How are you?"

    "I’m good. I was just calling because…" Tina faltered. The real reason for the call was that she had wanted desperately to hear Teresa’s voice. To make sure that everything was still okay between them after the conversation they had the morning before. "…I was wondering how babysitting went."

    "It was great. They’re great kids. How did babysitting Alice go?"

    The two women smiled and laughed into their phones.

    "She was her normal pain in the ass, but no complaints. I’m at the paper this morning…I heard about the Chinatown thing. How’s it going?"

    "It’s going. Chinatown is not the easiest area to police. They have their own set of rules."

    Tina agreed and pulled at the cord on her phone,

    "So…can I see you for lunch today?"

    "Actually I have meetings all afternoon; but I’ve got to check on something for my brother in law so I’ll be in your neck of the woods tomorrow. Maybe we can have lunch then?"

    "I’d love that."

    "Then it’s settled. will 12:30 work? I have something in the morning but I was hoping to shoot down your way around that time."
