    Her Guardian – Chapter 21

    “Hey stranger!  How are you?”

Bette gets out.  “I’m fine ma’am.  And you?”

    “Good.”

    “Is William feeling alright?”

“He’s great.  Why don’t you come on in and say hi to him?”

“Susan, I’m looking for Tina.  Is she here?”

“She was Bette.  She spent the weekend with us.  She left a few hours ago.”

Susan can see Bette deflate right in front of her.  She puts her hand on Bette’s back.  “Come on in for a few minutes.  Let me get you something to drink.”

Susan ushers Bette inside the house where she speaks to William for a few minutes.  Susan gives William a look to get him to leave the room.

    “Bette are you ok?”

“I’m fine.  I guess Tina told you what happened?” Bette asks, looking down.

    “She did.”

“And you still invited me in?”

“Bette, I thought you knew me better than that.  Putting it directly, whatever happened between you and my daughter is between you two.  I have liked you from the beginning.  And whether or not you and Tina are together has nothing to do with me inviting you into my house.”

    “Thank you.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No offense Mrs. K, but I don’t think that is a good idea.”

“And why not?  Do you think I will automatically side with Tina?”

    “No.”

“Look Bette I can’t make you talk, but if you want to I’ll listen.”

    “Did she tell you everything?”

“I suppose.  Why don’t you tell me what happened?”

“I’d rather not re-hash the whole thing.  I’m sure Tina told you.”

    “Ok.  So now what?”

    “I don’t know.”

“You came here to find Tina and tell her you don’t know?”

Bette laughs.  “Mrs. K, you know that I love your daughter?”

“I have never doubted that.  It’s so obvious.”

    Bette smiles.

“She loves you too,” Susan points out.  Bette smiles again.

“So I came here to talk to her.  To try to work things out.”

    “Is that what you want?”

“Yes.  I want us to be together, to be happy.  But I don’t want Tina to be a basket case every time I go to work.”

“And do you intend to tell her that?”

    “I do.”

“Then I suggest Bette, that you go and find Tina.  Tell her how you feel. From your heart.  You can never go wrong if you speak from your heart.”

Bette gets up to leave.  Susan hugs her and follows her outside.  Bette retrieves her cell phone to call Tina and finds that it’s dead.  “Great, just great.  My battery is dead.”  She takes out her car charger and plugs it in.

“Do you want to use our phone?”

“No.  I think this needs to be done in person.”  She thanks Susan and heads back home.
