    Hippocampus Chapter 1

I don’t know where I am, except that I’m half-lying, half-sitting on the floor. I think I’m in a house, someone’s home. There’s the usual furniture around. A whitish, beige-coloured sofa with really mismatched cushions. A table, with a table lamp almost ‘overgrown’ with Post-Its. There’s some sort of systematic untidiness around here – clothes, magazines strewn around, as if the owner made it a point to keep the place deliberately messy because she (most likely I think) thrives in chaos. The air was rather… still – you could tell that no one had been in here for a few days but not to the extent of getting stale yet.

The place was mostly unremarkable. Except. Except for this huge giant of a whiteboard in front of me. There were names written all over it, with lines interconnecting them. It looked like a work in progress. Some lines are darker, evidently newly drawn and others were so faint you could barely make them out. And some names had so many lines extending from them I didn’t know if there was space to squeeze in another line. Like Shane. That name was smack right in the middle of the web and it was even accentuated with this exploding balloon shape around it. Shane. For some reason, the name sounded familiar. Shane. Or maybe I just like the sound of it – it’s a nice name.

Shane. Just saying the name gives me this cosy feeling inside. I forgot about how lost I was for a few moments, just that few moments.

I can’t really feel the floor I’m sitting on. But somehow, I know how it feels like, or is supposed to feel like. It’s hard, smooth, and probably a little cold. You know, usually, you run your fingertips over a surface and the contours, the ridges, the temperature, the firmness, all that information and more is transmitted along your sensory nerves, ascends up your spinal cord, passes your brain stem, shooting off collaterals here and there before terminating at your cortex – all within milliseconds – and bingo – it’s a piece of paper or it’s a paperclip or it’s the steel strings of a guitar. Just like that. But no, I know that isn’t what’s happening to me now.

    1. My Danish/twin telepathy has drawn me to your fic… That. Or your direction to it. Finally a Danish writer that is out of her eerie hibernation! And what a great way to start off a chapter with an interesting POV. Nice, Wischnia! You know what else is ‘gangsta’? Howie secretly owning a barbie doll. We just don’t know it yet. More ‘Piece-a-Key’ please! asap.

    2. coll: Anni_M is right. Hope that has cleared your doubts. But of course the possibilities are endless: Alice could be on drugs and suffering from the sides effects of hallucinations and amnesia, or Danish could have taken a leaf from Sharmen and are playing a game of their own called ‘Too forgetful’. Anni_M: LOL, other than being my Yoda, have you doubled up as my secretary as well? Haha thanks anyway! Red: How did you guess? Howie has more barbie dolls than Dana and he plays with them while wearing a Strawberry Shortcake T-shirt.

    3. Can you hear the hands clapping all over the place? I can. Great job with this new fic. Finally we get something different from what we’ve used to. Updates, please!
