    Hold On – Chapter 5

    Alice’s Apartment –

“What a night, huh?” Alice walked into her apartment, leaving the door open behind her.
Shane followed her in and closed the door. “Yeah, that was something else.”
Shane took a seat on the couch while Alice went into the kitchen and
began searching through the refrigerator. “Do you want a beer?”

    “Yeah, sure,” Shane replied.

Alice pulled out two bottles, then turned, kicking the door shut with
her foot. She walked over to Shane and handed her one of them.
“Thanks,” Shane said, taking the cold drink.

Alice sat down next to her. “I just can’t believe Dana’s getting
married. I mean when we went to that country club a year and half ago
to scope Lara out, did you think things would turn out like this?”

Shane was quiet for a moment. “No… but I’m not surprised. I think it was meant to be.”
Alice stared at her, a little taken aback by her response.
    “What?” Shane asked.

Alice smiled. “Nothing. I just – I didn’t know you were such a romantic.”

“I just want them to be happy,” Shane said. “They deserve it.” She took a sip of her beer.
    “Doesn’t everyone?” Alice asked.

Shane looked away, her eyes dropping to the floor.

“Okay,” Alice said, seeing that she had hit a nerve. “Forget I said that. Do you remember how we met?”
“You walked into Lather and I cut your hair.”

“Actually… I saw you before that.”

“Where?” Shane asked, surprised by this new piece of information.
“At Milk. You were sitting at the bar. I really wanted to go over and
talk to you, but my friend Lesley said that you were this like total
player and I should just leave it alone.”
    “And you listened to her?”
“No, I got her to tell me where you worked.”

“So, you came into Lather to try and pick me up?”

“No,” Alice said, answering a little too quickly. “I was just curious
about you. I am a journalist remember? And your many conquests were
making you a bit of a legend around town.”
“So you were looking for a story.”

“I was looking to find out who you were,” Alice said genuinely.

    “Did you?” Shane asked.

“Nope, you’re a mystery Shane.” Alice took a sip of her beer.

Shane grinned. “That’s what draws in the ladies.”
