Bette stood outside Helena’s apartment, silently pacing back and forth as she worked herself up to knocking.

She strode towards the door, fist outstretched then turned and backed away again, repeating the same routine several times over before she realised how ridiculous she looked.

She turned around and sat down, her head in her hands on the doorstep as she went back over the first couple of weeks in her new apartment, the move that was supposed to signify ‘putting down roots’, ‘a new start’ and everything else cheesy that went along with such a life altering move.

Except the only thing that had altered in her life was the preoccupation of her thoughts on someone else.

Helena; as difficult to read as War and Peace, as beautiful to look at as the Mona Lisa and as complicated to break into as the exterior of Fort Knox, passionate, forthright and deeply wounded. Bette didn’t know if she wanted to beg her for answers or tell her they were over, both seemed ultimately wrong.

Her anger towards her started settling, as she remembered the mornings when there were gifts on her own doorstep, and the times when those gifts were Helena. She fought hard to disassociate the woman who made her feel alive for the first time in years and the one who’d apparently lied to her.

She took a deep breath, stood up and knocked, the harsh series of raps echoing through the quiet early evening as if to remind her that they were quite alone.

Helena slid open the door on the latch, peeking out. “Bette?”

Bette looked to the floor then looked up, “Can I come in?”

Helena slid off the latch and opened the door as she turned and walked away, saying nothing.

Bette followed her inside, a little put off by the darkness of the hallway, but once inside she felt a rush of relief, as Helena’s apartment felt warm and cosy, if a little untidy.

“Would you like a drink?” Helena asked, going to the kitchen and fixing herself one, “I’m having gin,” she continued, supplying details Bette hadn’t asked for, “it calms me.”

    1. Noooooooooooooooooooooo! Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh! No no no no no no no! Helena’s not lying! You’re driving me crazy!!!!!!!! :P :P :P(Hope you found your passport)

    2. WOW WOW WOW WOW!!! You’ve got us going all over the place but really nowhere at all. I love it, I love sofasitter, AMAZING!!! So lucky to have your fic!!! Can’t w8 4 next post.

    3. OMG, blaspheme…you’re making Tina out to be the bad guy! There’s a twist I wasn’t considering. So Helena’s Bipolar, but is there something a little crazy with Tina…she’s exacting her revenge against Helena because Evie and her were having an affair and Helena feels guilty about Evie’s death, so she’s letting her. But how is Peggy fitting into the picture…was it just happenstance that she turned up around the same time. Damn, it’s too hard to guess. I’ll just have to wait until tomorrow again!

    4. I detect some Satina-ish behavior… Is there a black crow that follows Tina around or a black cat that’s taking it all in? This story keeps getting better. : )

    5. I can’t keep what is what and who is who. It Helena the good, bad or evil one. It Tina the sick one. Bette we know is just Bette. So we will find the good ,bad, and evil one soon. Why do I think its Tina. Heck it couldbe Bette. Just write. hope you found your passport. thanks

    6. What??! What???!! What??!! OMFG! And here’s another fucking twist! You keep me on the edge of my seat! I can’t stand it!! But i want more!! Please!!

    7. I’m sorry I haven’t commented before. I’ve been so unsettled after each chapter that I couldn’t figure out what to say. It has taken me ten chapters to get my bearings. :-) This is an incredible story, pulling us along, spinning this way and that, just like Bette, as the story twists and turns. Big big kudos.

    8. Wow, sofa! The things that go on in that mischeivious mind of yours… I did not see that coming. Every chapter leaves me wanting more. As much as I can’t wait for the next post, I have no desire for this twisted tale to end. Excellent!

    9. I actually check for new updates of this story before I check my email thats how bad I got it. Helena might be a little cuckoo for cocoa puffs but a least she’s loyal. Bette believes a woman she hardly knows over Helena who she supposedly care about, maybe Helena should be the one running away. I have just one question….if Bette is trying to forget a sexy ass woman like Helena why would she downgrade to Dr. Kennard?

    10. I’ve been wondering why Bette is so willing to disbelieve Helena and believe Tina without question. If the good Dr. Kennard is NOT Helena’s shrink, why, oh, why does Tina have a file on her? Maybe the file isn’t medical as the label implies? Maybe Tina isn’t even a shrink! But apparently, she’s a good lay. Anyway, I was very pleased to see HB reference Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, but come on, don’t you think Bette should play Bette?

    11. oh fuck whose the crazy one here??? But Helena doesn’t have to go there does she???? In fact, she shouldn’t and its no wonder she’s still a mess if she’s going to the gf of the dead woman for therapy?! And for Tina to fuck Bette is totally unethical and evil. B is obviously an obsessive compulsive, H bipolar & Tina a control freak who doesn’t want Helena to get well. Between them they r going to drive Bette CRAZY between them no wonder Marina won’t even discuss it. Whose is the car keeping an eye on Helena? If its a Peabody then Mrs Peabody needs to DO something for her daughter soon. Where is big sista Kit in all this; Bette needs her urgently. PPS.

    12. Tina scares me… I think she tried to kill Helena but instead she killed Evie o.O hmm I don’t know.. this story is making me paranoid heheh.. I loved this chapter!!! PPS

    13. lol, i’m loving reading comments babe. i totally agree that helena is seeming more and more sane by the page…absolutely wonderfully drawn out story. i seriously think that when this one wraps, i want it in novella form. i think you’ve drawn out the story in a way that (by the way i’m in awe of) unfolds the story perfectly, revealing just enough with each chapter, and giving only very brilliant clues to how each character tells or does not tell, the truth of the story. faaantastic. and the growling was a good touch. very good. it turned me on AND made me go “uh oh, tina and bette aren’t so good together right now whats going on with TINA????” good show baby xo

    14. OMIGOD, rau hit it on the head!!! tina doesn’t want helena to get well, it’s like like…joan crawford is tina and bette davis is helena and, no, wait, other way around, tina is bette davis in ‘whats the matter with baby jane’ and she won’t let her sister get well!!! i LOVE that movie. oh, and i love this story more because its not really like that movie, because if it were, there would be no one wanting to have sex. bette is obsessive, she’s acting very strangely. she could have a hot british girlfriend by now if she weren’t so worried all the time. ok, fine, she’d be a drug dealer, but she’d finance all of her ventures. more! can’t wait! lol

    15. Well, damn. And here I was thinking Helena really was lying… Tina’s a bit heartless, isn’t she? why won’t she let Helena into her “real” office? Why is Tina screwing with everyone? Is she twisted, or just consumed with some need for revenge? Questions, questions… This is so so good, I can’t wait to see how this all turns out. thanks sofa!
