“She owns a gallery,” Helena mumbled, popping a second piece of nicotine gum into her mouth and chewing harshly.  She glanced up at her doctor and frowned, “I didn’t know ‘real’ people owned galleries,”

“What did you ‘think’ real people do?” Dr Kennard asked,

“Work in offices, or schools, or sometimes banks …”

“So people who write books or make art or own galleries aren’t ‘real’?” Dr Kennard replied, just checking,

Helena shook her head, “No … they’re like me.”

Bette closed the front door and stood the other side of it, deliberately not getting the light.

Through the ground floor of the apartment she had a completely clear view of Helena’s across the courtyard, as it suddenly sprang to life, filled with light upon the arrival of Helena’s mother.

The sight of it made Bette wince, the bright luminous glow so unnatural and such an unwelcome intrusion into Helena’s life, making her want to storm across there and rescue her, bringing her back over to the dark side.

“You think you can ‘save’ my daughter?” the woman had hissed as she took Helena by the arm and forcefully led her away.

Helena stopped to kiss her on the cheek, “Bye Bette, it’s been fun,”

Bette opened her eyes once again, blocking out the replay, she threw her keys onto the counter top and switched on the light, muttering to herself, “None of it’s real …”

“And where were you last night?” Alice chastised, mocking Bette as she sat down to join them,

Bette frowned and said nothing, eager to keep to herself the fact that she sat brooding most of the evening on her couch, fleetingly toying with the idea of calling by Helena’s to see if she was ok. Performing a religious stakeout on the door across the courtyard, through which she would appear if she stepped outside to smoke, before finally giving up and calling it a day around midnight, the image of Helena sat provocatively in the Naples fountain still on her mind.

“Just fancied a quiet night in,” Bette lied,

“Well, you missed Dana here going for a cute blonde in hot-pants,” Shane teased,

    2. You have no idea what you’re doing to me with this story, couch! Heheh…Absolutely none! I am totally … entranced … enamored … enthralled with it! Heheh…like your girl said, it’s “faaanfukckingtastic” (nice word, hb). I know and appreciate that you’re writing as quickly as you can…but when something is this good and enjoyable…it is truly hard to wait for the unfolding. Thank you so much for taking the time to write…My assessment is: I perceive it as truly brilliant and awe-inspiring! Quite! Keeps me thinking and wondering… :)

    3. So Helena doesn’t feel “real”? I started to doubt it myself, for a minute, with her disappearance, until Helena reappeared and Alice nearly managed to mess it all up. Have I mentioned how good this story is? I’m sure I have, but I’ll reiterate. It’s really good, sofa. Thanks

    4. Aghhhh…only more questions! You’re killing me here. I’m trying to figure out how everyone fits in, but it’s impossible. I’ll just wait for your next update.
