    Intervention – Chpt 3

    Previously

“Hope you girls look forward to enjoying a long, leisurely dinner.”

“I’m in no hurry,” the young women replied simultaneously. They looked at each other and blushed.

A cell phone began to ring.

The trio began rummaging through their bags for the offending menace.

“It’s mine,” Peggy called out, holding up her phone victoriously. “Excuse me,” she said identifying the number and removing herself from the table.

When out of earshot, Peggy said, “Yes, Franklin. She’s here. You did well, my dear.”

    Chapter 3

Bette played nervously with her empty olive skewer, circling the frilled pick in the bottom of her empty glass.

There was a tension at the table.

Helena watched Bette, then grabbed the server by the sleeve as he was passing behind her.

    “Garçon?”

    “Yes, mademoiselle,” he smiled.

“Please bring another Grey Goose martini when you come back by. And another of what my mother was having as well,” Helena asked politely.

“Certainly,” he said, dismissing what he was doing to quickly return to the bar.

“Thank you,” Bette said, looking up at Helena.

“You’re welcome,” Helena said softly, again putting her hand atop Bette’s and stroking it tenderly.

When Bette stiffened, Helena pulled her hand away.

Helena peered at Bette. “I’m sorry, I…”

“It’s all right,” Bette interrupted. “I just…” Bette abruptly stopped.

“No need to explain, darling. Sometimes I’m just a little too, well, shall we say, ‘handy?’”

    “I guess that’s a reasonable description.”

Helena’s eyes grew wide and she picked up her drink and shifted back in her chair.

“Oh! You think I’m ‘handy’, do you,” she teased as she sipped her drink with one hand and held her other at arm’s length, examining it at length humorously as she wiggled her fingers.

Smirking at the obvious flirtation and tiring of fighting her inhibitions, Bette replied, “I just think…well…” But her voice trailed off as she grew self-conscious.

“You think what, Bette?” Helena smiled, a grand self-satisfaction brightening her face.

Bette hesitated, then slightly slurred her words as she spoke. “Are you trying to take advantage of me, Helena Peabody.”

    1. Oh, Helena is absolutely priceless. LOL! From their interaction, it almost appears as though Helena is attempting to rekindle Bette’s interest… I wonder what may or may not have happened before…Fantastic story Zheese!

    2. “Too much time on my hands” … who wrote/sang that? Um…e-chickaroonie…well, I’m a funny person…what can i say…?…not as funny as funnyone though…She rocks! **Runs away to cook dinner**…**Returns sheepishly back**…um…East…I want everyone to know what a wonderful writer you are. You wrote one of the most beautiful Helebette stories I’ve ever ever read…the Malibu story! Absolutley outstanding.

    3. Well, with Peggy driving the conversation, what else would they talk about? Shucks zheese, I’m over here scuffing my toe in the dirt cause of your compliment. It is implicit in my long readership that I find YOU funny, and much more. Now, I certainly don’t mind Peggy leaving the girls alone-I want to see what develops. But bring Peggy back from time to time to keep the humor/embarrassment factor up, please. By the way, I notice Peggy left without leaving a tip for the waiter. Talk about playing with the hired help.

    4. Leave it to Peggy to get things moving in the right direction (LOL). And out of the 3 of them I can’t decide who has the funniest one liners….

    5. Now look who posted again :) are we playing the game tag you’re it LOL. but I’m not complaing it was nice to read you as usual and that ast sentence of Helena was just hilarius, seems she got a little of her mummy’s humor afterall. Can’t wait for more darling.
