    Jess — Plan B, pt. 7

I held the phone with one hand. The other hand had that stupid sweaty palm thing going on. I kept wiping it on my jeans, but that only did so much. What was it about sweaty palms lately? And why aren’t I hearing anything? “Aunt Alice?”

“You know, I think I hear your Uncle Frank calling.”

Unheard on this clear, quiet connection? Yeah, right.

Time for a little pleading. “Aunt Alice, please?”

    “Jess?”

“Yes?” Perhaps that little pleading thing worked.

    “Jess?”

    “Yeah, I’m here.”

    “Jess, I can’t hear you.”

Ok, so the pleading thing wasn’t working. But who’s to say her evasion thing would, either. “That’s bullshit.”

    “Jess -”

Just like I called it. “Aunt Alice, no one will tell me the truth.”

More quiet. Geez, I hope she doesn’t hang up.

Let’s try some truth. “I know you’ve talked to Bette Porter about me.”

    “Look, Jess.”

“What?” I think I’ve done enough kind, cute, and cuddly for one morning. Well, my own version of it, but still.

“Jess,” another pause from Aunt Alice’s end. “Jess, I really think this is something you should address with your mom when you get back here.”

    “She’s here, now.”

“What?” The surprise was genuine. I guess mom bypassed the usual gossip routes yesterday; she must have really been freaked.

“I kind of got a little lost yesterday.”

“Jess?” Now she was doing that little pleading thing, in her own way.

“Ok, so I wanted to figure out who this Bette Porter is. I went to her gallery.”

    “Wow.”

If nothing else, maybe this little experience would get me a little respect. Or at least a few people wouldnt see me as a little kid – a feeling I kind of get from some of mom’s friends.

    “And?”

So much for Aunt Alice hanging up. I think I’ve got her attention.

“And, um, I met her. Eventually.”

    “Eventually?”

“Let’s just say it was a little later in the evening than I’d planned.”

“Okaaay. And so your mom’s there because?”

While you’d think I might, I don’t really feel less stupid the more times I talk about last night.

“I was missing for a while. The school freaked. Mom freaked.”

    “And Bette?”

“Well, she was kind of the anti-freak among all of it.”

Aunt Alice was quiet again. I don’t know why, but that worries me more than when she’s speaking. Maybe it’s because I’ve had to deal with so much of mom’s quiet spells.

“I think she kind of liked meeting me.”

    “Really.”

So much for Aunt Alice being helpful. Here I’d spilled most of what I knew, and I was getting absolutely nothing in return.

“So, why does she know me? Why do you tell her about me?”

“Jess, I’m not sure I’m the one you should be talking to.”

“Right, but you’re the one who’s talking.”

    “Huh?”

“Mom’s developed selective hearing. Bette Porter, well, I kind of hated asking her stuff, she just looked sad when I did.”

    “Huh.”

This was going absolutely so close to nowhere. I was starting to be sorry that I wasted my minutes.

Let’s just establish the ground rules, and see where it takes us.”Ok, I know you know Bette Porter. I know you talk to Bette Porter.”

Quiet, so far, but I know she’s hooked.

Of course, to take the full on trip with Aunt Alice, I was going to have to try some fancy bluffing. “I know my mom was involved with Bette Porter around the time I was born. I know I look like Bette Porter. I know my middle name was given to me in honor of Bette Porter.”

    “Jess.”

“That’s my first name.” Stupid, stupid. Don’t get too snotty. Not only doesn’t she like it, but she does it much better than you.

“Jessica, listen. I’m not sure what you want.”

    “I want the truth.”

    “But you know that truth.”

Thank you Aunt Alice. I do now. At least some of it.

    “Not the real truth.”

    “And that is?”

“Was Bette Porter supposed to be my mother?”

I counted slowly. This time to twenty, using the one-mississippi method.

    “Aunt Alice?”

Damn tears, they’re making my eyes sting. As if I’m not enough of a mess now, with the palm thing and all that.

“You need to talk to Tina, Jess.”

    This was going nowhere.

I clicked off the phone and set it on the counter so I could wash my hands, and then use a washcloth to wipe off my eyes. That helped a little.

I think maybe Aunt Alice is exactly right. That’s just what I’m going to do. Talk to my mother.

I quietly left the bathroom and edged past mom’s bed. She’s way zonked, but it’s deceptive since she’s a light sleeper.

Okay, so I should have left a note. But I’m sort of on a mission.

I’m not in a mood to talk to her, anyway.

    (tbcwhile interest remains…)

    1. c’mon! what are you so afraid of Kennard? you said it yourself, that was looonnnnngggggg time ago so why being speechless about it! I think you and i both know why????? and she deserves to know the truth about who BETTE PORTER really is….

    2. Oh stop being a tease, you know your story is WICKED! And I and a zillion others fans on this site are waiting with bated breath for your next chapter!!!

    3. uh..yeah…way interested here! Please keep going with this. Is Jess going back to see Bette? Alice was uncharacteristically mute about it all, must be a lot to say there that she couldn’t because of Tina. I’m really loving this story, it’s got this wonderful discovery/detective work going for it. And the fact that the protagonist is Tina’s biracial daughter is even more amazing. Love it!!

    4. “I think maybe Aunt Alice is exactly right. That’s just what I’m going to do. Talk to my mother.” I guess Jess’ mission involves talking to her other mother, Bette. Let’s hope Bette decides to include Tina and the truth will finally be told. Hopefully then they can start to heal some past wounds. Jess is obvious more like Bette than aesthetics.

    5. I love your story, maybe when Bette and Jess talk, you could create a parallel experience like Jess asking Bette why she left her for all those years, as Kit had left Bette or possibly, have Bette hold her and feel Jess’s loss as she held Tina when they lost their first child. Just a thought, its a really wonderful story

    6. Sometimes, life gets so hectic…and this site gets inundated with so many stories that I often time miss out on real gems. Thank god that didn’t happen in this case, though it did take me however long to finally discover this jewel of a story. Please, please, please continue. You must, I implore you.

    7. Jess is a girl on a mission! I love her fearlessness….she deserves the truth and maybe her quest will mellow Tina out a little! I love this story…did i say that yet?

    8. “I counted slowly. This time to twenty, using the one-mississippi method.” OK, I unfortunately am not that patient! Please post more soon! This is an excellent story.

    9. yes very interested can’t wait until she finds out about the truth about Bette and of course Bette & Tina back together where they belong

    10. Hey more posts on this story is the only way! Jess on a mission to her other mom. Bette & Tina on their on mission too maybe????

    11. Interest – way higher than the current interest rate being given at the banks!

      Please post soon!

Thank you for not teasing us, y-e-t.

    12. Just letting you know I’m still here…waiting….You *still* haven’t posted???….”Damn!”~walks aways with head hangin’ down.

    13. OOOH! I am so not going anywhere until you put that next chapter up! Please, please hurry…I’m thinking Tina’s the one who has to tell her because Bette won’t want to face Momzilla again…Right? Oh yeah, thanks for this-it’s really good!
