Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fourteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

Before she succumbed to a fitful sleep last night, she was intent and had her mind set about not speaking to Bette on her birthday. She knew it would be a big blow to her estranged lover, but like hell she didn’t care. Tina thought it was the bitterness and angst she felt within herself that hindered all thoughts of reaching out, but honestly, it was her wounded pride that was dictating her decision not to call. She went to sleep determined.. resolute.. absolutely sure about sticking to her “no communication” game plan. But unfortunately, whatever resolve she had conjured up was violently thrown out the window when she was rudely woken up at 2 in the morning by a call from Alice. At first, she hesitated to accept the call. But then, a thought made her heart beat faster and bring to life her sleeping nerves. Alice, no matter how quirky she was, would never call her at such an ungodly hour just to ask her to come home or chat. There must be some sort of emergency.

    Did Bette hurt herself?

That was the last thought that went through her mind before she pressed the button to accept the incoming call.

“H-Hello?” She remembered herself breathlessly muttering, more out of fear and dread than of sleepiness.

Tina expected to hear Alice’s rapid fire way of speaking whenever she was in a state of panic. She had sat up in bed, gripping the blanket tightly to prepare herself for whatever news her blonde friend was going to share.

But instead of hearing Alice’s distinctive voice.. she heard something else. Music. The sound of whistling accompanied by the dulcet tones of a piano.. and then, knocking the air out of her lungs and her eardrums from her right ear, she heard the most horrendous, off-key singing that anyone could ever be subjected to. It grated at her nerves, made her ears bleed and her face contort painfully.. but at the same time.. it was the sweetest and most soothing music to her broken heart. And as much as she didn’t want to, she found herself smiling amidst fresh tears. No matter how much anger and hatred she harbored for this woman, Bette still had the power to touch her hardened heart and remind her of all the love she still had for her in there. And the realization, however unexpected, had stung. Thankfully, Bette had hung up before she could hear her sob.

    1. oh god 3 weeks, hmmmm maybe we could skip a few weeks and just get them back together or is that just wishful thinking from me. lets just hope that the futures bright and that after 3 week Tina will be sorted and they will be together again*fingers crossed*.what a brill chapter though,so PPS thanks

    2. i cannot say how much i love this story and the length of the chapters! keep them coming Alch but i really can’t believe how Tina can manage to not hug Bette and go back home, especially considering how damn sweet and adorable and sorry she is…i know i couldn’t!! pps

    3. Fantastic chapter Alchemy – bittersweet and beautiful. So nice to see their old banter back, if only momentarily (at least for now). I get Tina’s reasons too, and agree with Jwet that it’s good she can stand firm with Bette even when Bette does her Bette thing and pushes. I did like it in this instance tho that Bette showed up at the diner, I think they needed that brief moment of connection even tho Tina still needs some space and time. Bette can back off too, now that she has been reassured,. Thanks for the shoutout Alch – I owe thanks to my absent friend mightymouse whose posts convinced me to read your fic – which is doubtless one of the best out there. You have me as nervous as the others with your three week preview, and things changing. Crossed fingers and toes it means good things for TiBette and not bad! Post soon!

    4. Great post, I actually got a little teary. Also, I think Bette needs to learn the difference between a partner and a girlfriend. Keeping something like this from Tina for three years was not cool.So Bette’s gonna go hang out with Melvin? I wonder what he’ll have to say about this.

    5. Ah, so sad, but there’s hope at the end there. Three weeks is going to seem like an eternity, and I gotta say, that teaser line for the next chapter has me slightly worried… Unless of course, the things that can change in 3 weeks simply include Bette learning how to be patient, Tina cutting out junk food, and maybe… hm. Shane learning that celibacy can be okay for shortish periods of time? Those things are (sort of) good things. Other things…. If I don’t give those things voice, then they can’t come to pass, right? So I’m gonna just shush. Anyway! Great update. Love the story, so thanks for posting, Alchemy. Cheers! :)

    6. Tears and laughter in every lines. You’re amazing. Three weeks is forever, anything can happen, but there is light in the end of the tunnel. On another note, Harry Potter is so bitin!

    7. Holy cow! That chapter completely blew me away! (Not a writer…can you tell?) Tha was an incredible emotional ride Alchemy! I don’t even know how many times I stopped breathing…just amazing! More, soon, please?

    8. I am out of town for five days and return to read this…! Girl… I’ m telling you that you will kill me before my time! I loved it. Thank you very much for that chapter. I will wait impatiently like Bette for the next one. Many kisses

    9. Oh,my!Now I’m a mess – crying around-.Really good writing,I’ve always loved this story…I hope that not many things will change in three weeks,at least not their love for each other, anyway bring them back together. You’re a great writer,PPVS.

    10. Oh! Oh! Oh!…I know this one…it’s “Feels like home” by Chantal Kreviazuk. Right? You really go for the heart jugular…whole new meaning to so near and yet so far (Tibette at resturant talking on cell). That paragraph that you wrote…”So I can trust you again. So I can love you wholly without remembering all the hurt, all the angst and bitterness…” Wowser! I nearly went online to buy stock at Proctor and Gamble (owner’s of Kleenex). So much angst. OK…a glimmer of hope at the end (3 weeks huh?) I hope you don’t mean that literally…fix it Alchemy! PPS!

    11. Oh God I love this Tina has it out there but pulls it back. Its what you have to do to someone like Bette who will push even when it’s to her detriment. Oh what a long long long three weeks it’s going to be. I can only imagine what trouble Bette will get herself in trying to make the time move faster. Thanks for you story I have read every chapter and love them beyond reason.

    12. hi alchemy, never left a comment before but i really really love your story and how you write it. you are just an extra-ordinary writer and can make a career out of it. this chapter brought so many tears in my eyes and though it really pains them to be apart for 3 weeks, i totally get tina’s reasons. i just hope we don’t wait for 3 more weeks for the next update. and i’m hoping that there will be a happy couple in the end. ps. i always read your new updates twice successively!!!

    13. I think we all share the same sentiments… Truly heartbreaking yet hopeful. Brilliantly written Al..I must have used a half a box of Kleenex on this one! :) POST SOON….PLEASE
