CHAPTER ONE: Let’s Take A Break..
Friday. Yale University Library.
“Don’t worry about a thing, I’ve got it all under control.”
Hearing those words, a frustrated breath left a pair of frowning lips. Wearing an expression that showcased her agitation to the full, she moved away from the steady stream of students making their way inside the library, hurrying to review before the last batch of exams started in the afternoon. Those who recognized her moved to the side, careful not to come in contact – her body language effectively and clearly telling them to stay the hell away. Situating herself in a secluded area by the side of the building, she crouched down and idly fingered the weeds by her feet. With weariness in her tone, she finally spoke into her mobile. “That’s what you said two months ago..”
“I know, but..”
“And last month..” She stood up and sent a pebble flying into a nearby fountain with a quick tip of her designer flats. She watched the ripples it created with sadness in her brown eyes.
“Elizabeth..”
“And last week too.”
A defeated sigh met her words. And for a minute there was nothing but silence from the other end of the line.
“Daddy..” Bette whispered after a beat, running a hand through her brown mane. “I can stay behind, I’ll tell the others that something came up. I’m sure they’d understand. It just.. it doesn’t feel right to leave you at such a crucial time..”
“I’ll be fine.” The man cut in and reassured, his voice firm. “Don’t underestimate me my dear, I have years and years of experience in this business. I’ve handled problems like these before..”
“But none of this magnitude.” His daughter pointed out evenly, stressing the facts.
Once again, silence found its way into the conversation, with both parties trying to re-group, searching for something appropriate to say – anything to argue their case. Unfortunately, they found none – and so the silence stretched even more.
“I shouldn’t have told you about all of this.” Melvin lamented ruefully after a while, his voice sounding older than his years.
“No. I have the right to know.” Bette countered, shaking her head.

i can’t express how happy i am that this story is back, i actually laughed out loud when bettes bikini bottoms came off after being worried that we were heading for a major drama with bette being seriously hurt – thats why your stories are sooooo good alch cos you can go from one from one extreme to the other in one paragraph! pps, oh and im sure i’ve told you before that “your Bette” is just about my favourite one ever in fanfic land…and believe me, i’ve read plenty!! pps!

I was seriously worried that Bette was hurt… but what did happen was so much funnier. Alice, buried in sand and hermit crabs (shudder) for merely *offering* to pee on Bette’s jellyfish sting? Yikes! Oh wait… Al did take that photo, didn’t she? I am however, worried about whatever it is that has Melvin lying to Bette. Is it a takeover of PGC? Board’s vote of no confidence? What’s going on? And what is Bette going to have to do to fix it? Agggghh, questions! I can’t wait for more posts, so we get answers. Thanks, Alchemy!

This situation, whatever it is, does not sound good. The company seems to be in trouble, which could lead to lack of funds. Bette has already survived that once but it would be nice if she would not have to do that again. Your humor is wonderful.

I envision Leisha Hailey peeing on Jennifer Beals…..the whole being able to put a face to your characters makes this terribly funny. I’m guessing that Mel is having an issue w/business and it’s not going to be life as $$$ usual for Bette. I hope he doesn’t die. Tks for the long post and future updates!!!!
