Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty One (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“Excuse me,” A voice interrupts my solitude. I look up at the source. It was a boy – probably a college student, judging from his worn-out clothes and the backpack slung casually on his shoulder. “Do you know what time it is?” He asks me, looking at my covered wrist, correctly guessing that I had a watch hidden under my coat’s thick sleeves.

“Ten to one.” I tell him, expecting the guy to come running off screaming that he was late for a class. He didn’t. And to my surprise, he says thanks, goes down a few steps and sits down. Not too close and not too far either. I didn’t mind; as long as he didn’t strike up a conversation with me, I had no qualms about having some company. The cold stone steps of St. Patrick’s got a little lonely during winter anyway.

He opened a ratty Philosophy book and for the most part, kept to himself. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said about his things. Unlike the quiet boy, his tattered manila envelope was noisy as hell – the words on the sticker attached to it screaming, just begging for attention. It called out to me in particular – forcing me to listen to its message; to take it in like the air that I was having a hard time breathing in my lungs because of the cold temperature.

One who walks in another’s tracks leaves no footprints, it said.

And when I stopped fighting the old proverb and allowed its meaning to wash over me, the words hit the intended mark. Yes, it summed up my frustrations in life quite nicely, it really did. I grab my cup of Starbucks and enclose it in my palms – letting its warmth seep into my chilled hands. I drank the liquid greedily, taking in huge gulps. It burned down my throat, warming my chest. But for reasons I cannot comprehend, the heat began to disappear when it usually lingered for quite some time. I began to feel as if a large current of air was penetrating through my clothes and skin – making my insides tremble and shiver. Was it the wind or the words? I wondered, finishing off my coffee and dumping the empty cup inside my paper bag. I dust off crumbs from my lap and push myself up to my feet. I heard the faint sound of the cathedral’s pipe organ playing Pachebel’s Cannon while I was throwing my trash, reminding me of the wedding that was taking place inside. I remember watching as the groom paced the front of the church – a mixture of nerves, excitement and fear in his eyes. I know the feeling, I’ve been there. I was once like him. Getting married to Jill was the best day of my life, and in close second was the day she said yes. But you know what’s funny? The day I married her was also the day that the Eric Walker I knew since birth died and ceased to exist. After that fateful afternoon in this very same church, I began the slow journey of losing myself – my identity. Gone was Eric Walker. And in his place was a Grisham.

    1. This is awesome. I love your long updates! Great chapter as usual I lol’d at the image of Melvin playing Bejeweled :) And loved that he thought Bette and Tina were role-playing. Can’t wait for next chapter! PPS

    2. Thanks for the update. I just love the banter amongst all the friends. I’m hoping that whatever Sam tells Bette will relieve some of her guilt feelings about Eric Walker’s death.

    3. Alchy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it, love it, love it. Thank you for posting, I’ve been waiting patiently for this. Love the Santa Monica Blvd analogy LOL. Don’t worry about comments for me, you need to be saving your energy for this story, and yes I know you do read. I feel your narcissistic presence in the room LOL. A little late for the suggestion, but I thought maybe you could borrow Tina’s maid uniform for the party LOL. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Can’t wait for long awaited make up sex, OMG! Okay, get to writing, chop-chop.

    4. Alch, it doesn’t matter how much you write, you always leave me wanting more. Don’t forget to leave a little time for writing in that plan of yours…we would miss you way too much and we are already dying for your next update. Loved your chapter and your story…we are a totally awesome writer!

    5. Ha-hah…Alchy humor reigns again!!!! Glad you’re back! Sounds you are doing well. The Tibette banter…priceless! Too darn funny…immortal weed/undying pimple , role-playing and brushing teeth, “shippers”, bulling ‘little kids’, competetive Porters, etc. Hysterical! I like that you had them talk in the future tense (ie: sex and having children…that calls for a sequel.) Bring it on Alchy…you are amazing!

    6. cow and milkmaid – undying pimple – ahahahaha! the t&b banter was great, alchemy you’re so funny and such a good writer – thanks for sticking with this excellent story – you’ve nothing to worry about, this chappy was excellent like all the others ;-) i see the plot thickens with the whole eric thing – as always no matter how long your chappy is, i still want more. thanks again for this delicious story!

    7. Its such a beauty having Bette and Tina talk about their future despite what the obstacles they are going through. Cant help but smile on the though of mini Tibettes.:)

    8. Great update! Hysterical, as always… your imagination is comedic genius…too many one-liners to mention them all. Love the way you’re bringing B&T back together and anxiously await the painful truth. I can’t wish you luck to finish the story in December cause I don’t want it to end!!
