Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Oh yeah?” Bette sniffled, her nose red and runny.

“Your father did.” He confessed a few moments later, when Bette was dusting again.

“Oh.” Was Bette’s quiet response, her back still turned on James. Although trying to appear unaffected, her rigid posture and sudden pause in breathing betrayed her surprise. “What does he want?”

“You.” Her assistant answered simply. “He wants to see you.”

    A beat.

“I see.” Bette mumbled, giving up on the bookshelf. She turned around and walked mechanically towards the coffee table to start cleaning near that area. What could daddy possibly want from me? She pondered with a deep sigh. “Is this because I found out that he was sending people to follow me around? Tell him it’s okay, I’m not mad. He doesn’t need to give me an explanation, he doesn’t need to—”

“He’s in the hospital.” James blurted out, silencing Bette and rendering her completely motionless, holding her feather duster in mid-air.

After what seemed like an eternity of non-movement, Bette resumed dusting – a vain attempt to try and shake off the feeling of dread that was creeping up her system. Her daddy was in a hospital. But why? “For those yearly executive check-ups?” She asked hopefully, keeping her voice painfully calm.

If only that were the case, James sighed weakly as he came clean to his boss. “No. He um.. he was found unconscious inside his room yesterday morning. He had a heart attack but he’s fine now and he wants to—” He stopped when Bette abruptly whipped her body around to look at him, horror and disbelief etched on her face.

“Yesterday?!” Bette yelled, completely appalled. The feather duster found its way to the floor. “And I’m only finding out about it today?!” Her voice rose up as bile began to crawl up her throat. She almost lost her father a day before and no one bothered to tell her until now?

    “I’m sorry, but he—”

Bette lifted a finger to shut him up. “What the hell is my name James?” She asked the guy, her breathing deep and labored as she tried to keep her emotions in check.

“B-Bette Porter.” James replied, his voice tiny and scared.

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
