Just The Girl – Chapter Nine (a HYD-inspired fic)

She followed the girl’s muddy footprints on the floor and found herself a few minutes later outside the gym’s locker room. She gingerly pushed it open and peeked inside. She heard the sounds of a locker slamming shut and angry footsteps squishing around the tiled floors. Helena stepped inside and walked as quietly as possible as she once again followed the trail that the girl left in her wake. She found her a few seconds later, head bent down as she quietly sobbed in front of one of the sinks.

"Excuse me.." Helena softly said, not wanting to increase the girl’s distress by scaring the life out of her.

Tina slowly lifted her head and looked at the mirror in front of her. Although her vision was blurred by tears, she immediately recognized the concerned looking face standing behind her. "Helena Peabody." She slowly whispered as she quickly wiped the tears away.

"I don’t want to intrude but.." Helena slowly stepped closer to the blonde. "..I saw what happened outside and I just needed to check if you were okay.." She said, genuine concern evident in her voice.

Tina turned open the taps and washed her soiled hands. "I’m okay.." She smiled as she splashed her face with water. Seeing the unconvinced look on Helena’s face, she continued. "I’m going to be fine.. cause.." She smiled as tears glistened in her eyes. "..cause I’m a weed. A stubborn one too." She nodded as she turned around and faced Helena.

The heiress had to smile a little at the blonde’s words. Bette was right, this one’s special, Helena thought. "Okay." She said as she watched Tina turn around again and wash her arms.

"Don’t." Tina said as she saw the pity in Helena’s eyes through the mirror.

"Excuse me?" Helena asked, a little confused.

"Don’t." Tina shook her head to the side. "Don’t feel bad for me." She smiled. "Because I won.. I’m no longer red tagged." She laughed a little at herself. "I survived through all the abuse and.." She swallowed hard before she continued. "Bette Porter conceded." She looked at Helena a little unbelievably. "Bette Porter actually conceded." She repeated, as if trying to convince herself that it was true. "And she actually did something decent and human in the process." She straightened up a little as she let out a deep breath. "So don’t feel bad for me. Just.. congratulate me or something.." Tina shrugged.
