Just The Girl – Chapter Seven (a HYD-inspired fic)

"Tell you what Bette?" Helena asked as her friend.

"Tell me what’s wrong with my friend. So.. I.. I can help her.." Bette stared at her hands.

Helena wiped the corners of her mouth with her napkin as she looked at Bette thoughtfully. "Your friend.. has not been sleeping well, has not been eating, and has been suffering from headaches after she met a girl who drove her absolutely crazy..?" Helena asked as Bette nodded her head slowly. "Okay. So basically your friend’s in love right?"

"I am NOT!" Bette screamed in defense, completely surprising the both of them as she slipped and gave herself away. "Uhh.. I mean.. SHE’s not.." She tried to backtrack, which only made her look more guilty.

Helena laughed. "Okay. Maybe "love" is a strong word, especially since you’ve just met this girl." She stroked her chin in mock concentration as she continued. "Infatuation maybe? Perhaps you’re extremely attracted to her to the point that you can’t deny it to yourself anymore?"

"MY FRIEND.. Hel. My friend. Not me." Bette frowned.

"Oh Bette. Forever the denial queen." Helena admonished. "Look, its just me. You know I won’t pass judgments." She reached out to take Bette’s hand from across the table. "I can keep a secret." She said sincerely. "Do you trust me, Bette?"

Bette sighed. "Yes, Hel. I do." Bette exhaled as she slowly looked up to meet Helena’s eyes. "I don’t know what to do.." She finally admitted.

"It’s not like you.." Helena started.

    "What?" Bette asked in confusion.

"It’s not like you to be so unsure." Helena continued. "The Bette Porter I know always knew what she wanted.." She squeezed Bette’s hand. "..and she pursued it endlessly until she got it." Helena smiled at Bette. "So what’s holding you back now?"

"I don’t know." Bette answered earnestly.

Helena lifted an eyebrow. "I think you’re scared."

    "Scared?" Bette asked.

Helena nodded. "Scared. What you’re feeling right now is something new — something completely foreign to Bette Porter. I also think you’re scared of what others might think of you — falling for the enemy and such." Helena looked at Bette sincerely. "It’s okay to be scared at first. But if you let your fears take a hold of you, you’ll never get anywhere."
