Ladies who Lunch (Time of Day 36)

Alice just shook her head at her friend. The two had met for lunch at the Planet. Expecting to be treated to lunch, instead, Alice found herself treated to a diatribe on Tina’s ‘demand,’ as Bette put it, to have more children.

“Give it up, Porter. You’re just mad because Tina controls the babybox.”

    “Alice.”

“Admit it.” Alice leaned back and sipped on her iced tea.

“I will admit no such thing, and you will never again refer to any portion of Tina as a ‘babybox.’”

“Bette, a few years ago, you and TK were all about popping out the puppies.”

Bette leaned forward, poised to reply, but held what she was going to say on a look from Alice.

“Now, you get a chance at that, and you’re putting on the brakes.”

“Alice, having any other children is not something that we’re going to rush into.”

    “Who’s rushing?”

    “Tina could, at any time…”

“Which is why,” Alice butted in, “you’re freaking out. This is an area where Tina has demonstrated self-determination that extends past your control.”

    “You’re being ridiculous.”

“Am I?” Alice put the glass on the table. “Tell me what you’re not scared that she’ll go do a solo act again.”

“I’m…” Bette stopped speaking, pressing her lips together tightly. “She said she wouldn’t.”

“That’s not the question, Dean. The question is do you, a, believe her, or b, are you scared that unexpectedly you’ll find some bumpage in the babybox?”

Bette shook her head. “I don’t know why I even try to talk about these things with you?”

    “Probably because you love me.”

That merited another look for Alice.

“That’s my guess, anyway,” the blonde continued, regardless.

“It’s not just this. There’s, you know, other issues to consider.”

“You have a sister. Don’t you want my earth daughter to have a sibling?”

    “Of course, but…”

“Ah.” Alice pointed at her friend. “Ah.”

“Fuck.” Bette muttered the word under her breath, but it was clear nonetheless.

“You’ve got to take that step, Bette. You’ve got to be able to trust.”

    “I know.”

“Don’t you think Tina’s got issues trusting you, too?”

    1. Like I said, lol babybox. I’ll have to remember that one. And now I’m imagining Tina popping out one baby right after the other. A house full of babies. OMG wasn’t that a Loretta Lynn song? Bette would go nuts.

    2. Babybox? Heh! Why I get the image of a baby coiled on a spring, in a little tin box, waiting for Tina to wind the handle and surprise everyone, I don’t know. Anyway… I hope Bette takes Al’s words to heart. It’s time to stop waiting for the bottom to drop out and just go on faith… Great update, I’m really pleased it came so soon! Thanks, pseud.

    3. Gosh, you got these characters down! Yes, IC came up with them, but I’ll admit that I prefer reading your stuff than IC’s. Perhaps, you should post your stuff onto ourchart. Maybe IC would pick up some pointers from you! Can’t wait until your next post!

    4. Ok still so reeeling from the first sentence of the last post…”Tina awoke in Bette’s bed.” Was thinking that that post was going in a whhhhollllleee other direction – took awhile to get my mind out of the gutter. I mean when I have insomnia my thoughts seem to naturally drift towards the lurid; it’s just so damn quiet and dark and tempting. Anyway, I digress, sorry to hear you can’t sleep Pseud. as everyone else said, however, your loss, our gain. LOL. I, too, loved the babybox metaphor, brings a bunch of crazy images to mind, which makes it even more appropriate that it came out of Alice’s mouth and then completely unnerves Bette. I also loved the bit about Jodi and “Damning with faint praise.” You’ve got a way with words Pseud. Looking forward to more of this, hope it’s sooner rather than later!! :)

    5. Pseud, Still loving every word from you. These last two posts were great. Firstly to have Tina stand up to Bette and demostrate how much she has changed and secondly, trusting Alice to so the straight talking and whop Bette up side the head. Hopefully this will have knocked some sense into her and she will follow the advice and go ans tell Tina exactly what she wants and needs. Bette belongs to Tina and vice versa so way does live get in the way and stop this pair being together. Brilliant. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    6. Bette is so lucky to have such a good friend in Alice. I hope she really heard her and heeds her advice. Loved the babybox…perhaps Bette should try and pin Tina down on a time…it might give her some control over the process, which is what I really think Bette craves. But I do like that it is a deal breaker and I am glad that Tina was insistant on that. Thanks for you time and effort on this story, I am sooooo hooked, I look for you new posts all the time!!

    7. Thank you for having Bette admit to being scared of Tina having a baby any time she wanted. Bette needs to take a blind leap of faith and go with it. And hopefully you’ll have Tina talk to Bette about the babybox and when Tina and Bette are ready to pop out a baby. Babybox. Babybox. Babybox. Babybox. Babybox.

    8. Yeah, let’s see: Tina promises she won’t go ahead with a unilateral pregnancy, yet it’s a deal breaker-if what? Bette doesn’t want to do the kiddy thing round two? In other words Tina intends to go ahead with another pregnancy at some point whether Bette’s on board or not? Or what? Sounds like Tina has her autonomy. Not that she shouldn’t, but I still don’t detect them both committing, not only to each other, but to treating each other with respect, consideration, and compassion. I guess that because they both want the same things, even if they can’t always admit it, its supposed to fall magically in place. But I remain skeptical that it can last without more than these two have demonstrated so far.

    9. Hooray for Alice and double Hooray for Tina for making the family a deal breaker. Bette needs to really pay attention to what Tina is telling her. Please make Bette heave to. She’s gotta come around to Tina’s point of view. Tina is exhibiting the patience of Jog right now and Bette is being a superlative JACKASS. Love the story and the girls.

    10. You know Bette well. I love the babybox comment about Tina. Tina has changed and is more confindent about herself and I would guess about her love for Bette also. Now it is Bette’s turn to work through all their mess and go get her woman as Alice told her to do.

    11. That was absolutely delicious…you woke up with Candace and had the inspiration that u loved T….T has her own thing going on…Angie/the studio….has she out grown me? I’d say, a resounding YES!!!! Bette needs to catch up…maybe T was always more advanced…because T listens!!!! Bette is so caught up in Bette…lordy where does T get the patience from to love the woman? or is it just the beautiful Porter ass that keeps her hooked???? PPS

    12. wow you write when you cant sleep. i want to do ‘other’ things. ;) ive been a babybox 4 times. how cool is that??? compromise, understanding, hard stuff. thanks.

    13. Really good chapter. Glad I can finally leave a comment. My internet wouldn’t let the box come up for a while. Alice is a really good friend in this story. Yeah, Bette might be afraid of the prospect of having another kid.. but what are her real dreams for the future? Seems like it should be a no brainer that Tina would want another kid. PPS.
