    Lest I Forget (33)

I had just finished the story of Charlie’s birth when our daughter walked into the room, looking pretty stressed out. I felt sorry for her immediately. Obviously Alice hadn’t meant to have a stroke at the busiest time of the academic year, but Kallie was definitely feeling the strain of it on top of running a university department.

“I’m so sorry I missed your call,” she said immediately after bending down to kiss Alice’s cheek. “Did something happen?”

“No, nothing much. She had a little trouble sitting up, but everything’s all right. She’s fine now. I did leave a message,” I told her.

She smacked her forehead. “I didn’t even think to check the office machine. I’m so sorry; I saw your number and sorta freaked out. I rushed right over.”

“It’s okay. I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just calling to tell you what was going on,” I replied.

“Thanks,” she said, taking a seat on the other side of the bed from me. “Has the doctor been in recently?”

“No, but Gemma said he’d probably come in early tomorrow. They want to start her on some beginning physical therapy since she’s able to sit up.”

“Oh, did she actually do it?” Kallie asked. “I thought she had some problems.”

At this, Alice made a sound that was halfway indignant and halfway angry. I took her hand and squeezed it. “I’m sorry sweetie. I don’t mean to talk about you like you’re not here.” Gemma echoed my statement, and Alice rolled her eyes at both of us.

“Anyway,” I continued, squeezing Alice’s hand, “Gemma said that she did really well after a few minutes, so that’s a good sign.”

“Yeah,” Kallie replied, but she appeared lost in her own thoughts.

“She should be back before too long,” I told her, smiling at the way she blushed when I said it.

“That’s not why I came…” she started, but Alice laughed at her. Well, as close to a laugh as she could get, anyway. “All right, fine, it’d be a nice bonus,” Kallie admitted, and this time I laughed with Alice. Kallie just blushed again and shook her head.

“I don’t even know where it’s going. I’m so busy with work right now…”

    1. Another great update from you MT! I hope Gemma would be the one for Kallie. You never know if he or she would be the one but at least Kallie was giving love another try. I also like Shane and Jenny adopting Ryan. Love the fact that they all stayed as close friends over the years. Good to see A interacting a little bit more. The scene when they discussed Kallie and Gemma was very entertaining. MT, you are a fantastic storyteller. Thank you so very much for updating this story.

    2. Excellent as always, MT!! I know I keep saying it, but, I love how you have Alice having lost so much but still being able to be so Alice (like giving Dana the finger, harassing Dana about not helping her eat and thinking about how she could continue to write among so many other little touches). Poor Kallie. Her last break-up must have been truly devastating. Gemma may not be forever, but, at least she is making an effort to try another relationship. Love the additional background on Shane and Jenny’s relationship and history. So happy to hear they were able to foster several kids and adopt two. Great story. Thanks so much!!
