Chapter 16 – Do What You Can Do

Saturday morning found Bette setting up shop at the Farmers market. It was a glorious morning which gave hints of the blistering afternoon that was to come. Bette had just finished setting up her display of artwork when Jason made his entrance. He looked a little under the weather.
Bette: Hey, could you use some help?
Jason moving slowly: Hi Bette, I dont know whats wrong with me, I just ache all over.
Bette walks over and puts her hand on Jasons forehead. Youre hot! What are you doing here today? You should be in bed.
Jason: You think?
Bette: Oh yeah, get out of here. Let me take care of things here today for you. Go on get. Jason eyes Bette and knows what she is saying makes sense.
Jason: Youre my angel Bette, Thanks— you sure youll be OK?
Bette: Yeah, yeah get out of here. Its not like Im trying to cure world hunger or anything, it just art. Hey, if anything urgent comes up Ill just have to call.
With that Jason turns around and leaves. This made for a busy morning for Bette. By 10 AM she had people starting to pile up a little handling both booths. The chaos of it all would have been enough to drive the old Bette into a tantrum. At one point, Bette had to step back to re-group, taking a big sigh, Bette told herself you can only do what you can do and the rest will take care of itself. By the time Shane showed up at noon Bette was ready to pack it up for the day.
Shane walks up and watching Bette. Man, I dont ever remember seeing you sweat before. Shane jokes.
Bette: Ha, Ha – funny Shane. You can give me a hand you know.
With that Shane stood in front of Bettes paintings, asking customers as they came up if they needed any help. Just then a potential customer walks up and begins to ask about some of the paintings. Shane trying to imitate what she had heard Bette say in the past: What does it say to you?
The customer ponders a moment and then responds: Safe, It makes me feel safe.
With this Shane looks closer. She was right this painting was titled Abuse and Recovery the coloring was dark tones of deep red to black which were crashed by golden amber tones which ascend to a sort of safe haven. The overall impact was dramatic leaving the viewer feeling that they had traveled a journey and reached a safe haven. Right then Shane thought she was beginning to formulate an idea of the plan.

Shane helped Bette the rest of the day packing up both the remaining painting and Jasons ceramics into her truck. After arriving at Jasons house, dropping off his stuff and checking on him, Shane wondered if Bette was up to eating.
Shane: Bette, you hungry?
Bette: You know I am hungry and need a little something but do you think we could get it to go. I would love nothing more than a bath and bed. Not that I dont love your company but Im beat.
Shane: Works for me.

As soon as Shane made Bettes wishes come true she popped open her cell: Kit look I think I came up with the plan are you busy can I come over?
