Scene: 4
Location: Bette and Tina’s House
Tina is sitting by the pool with the baby monitor next to her and she is on the phone.
Tina: Hey Alice would you be up for a barbecue this weekend?
Alice: Sure that sounds like fun.
Tina: Would you let everyone know and pick up a few things at the store? I promised Bette I would make you guys help.
Alice: As long as I don’t have to man the grill, I’ll do whatever you want.
Tina: I’ll handle the grill you just get everyone here by 3:00 on Sunday.
End Scene.
Dana, Jenny, Shane, Carmen are sitting at a table together. Tina comes in with Angelica and goes to join them.
Everyone: Hi.
Tina: Hi guys.
[Shane pulls over a chair for Tina. Dana goes over to the baby carriage and says hello and starts making faces at Angelica. Jenny and Carmen laugh at Dana’s antics.]
Shane: Tina, where’s Bette?
Tina: She went to Philadelphia with Kit. They have to clean out Melvin’s house.
Jenny: Wow, that must be tough.
Tina: Jenny, I haven’t seen you around much you should come by this weekend.
Carmen: Oh yeah, Alice said something about a barbecue.
Dana: What barbecue? [Gives her why am I the last to know look.]
An Uncomfortable silence falls upon the table.
Tina: Uh, I’m having one this weekend, you and Lara are more than welcome to attend. I’m sorry Dana, I wasn’t thinking and told Alice to spread the word.
Dana: No, it’s okay I have a tournament in San Diego anyway. Speaking of which, I had better get going. It was good to see you Tina. [Dana gets up, takes her phone & keys off the table and leaves.]
Everyone: Bye Dana.
End Scene.
Bette is driving Kit through the city past the landmarks, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Constitution Hall where the Liberty Bell is, Society Hill, then she heads towards the old neighborhood.
Bette: Look it’s the Museum of Art, my mother used to take me there all the time. [Bette smiles wistfully.] I wonder if I’ll have time to stop and see the Rodin sculptures
Kit: Wow, I haven’t been to the Liberty Bell since I was in elementary school. I remember complaining to daddy about a dumb ole bell with a crack in it and boy did he give me a lecture on the constitution and how blacks weren’t originally equal citizens and the importance of the Bill of Rights and didn’t they teach us anything in school or was I just too lazy to pay attention
Both Bette and Kit ruefully laugh.
[Bette drives through their old neighborhood and pulls up in front of their old house.]
Kit: This is our old neighborhood? [Disbelief in her voice.] I knew things had gotten bad, but [She shakes her head.]
Bette: Yes, it’s certainly changed.
Kit: I can see why daddy sold the house. I always had a hard time picturing him living anyplace else. Remember how pristine he always kept everything?
Bette: [Takes a deep breath and says just above a whisper] Yes. [Bette puts the car into gear and drives off.]
End Scene.
