Life and Love and Why – 21
"It’s one thing to walk into guaranteed torture, but you’re catering the event?" Ned asked incredulously, sitting on a chair at the dining table. "Have you lost your mind?"
"I need the distraction," Tina defended herself. "Look, it’s bad enough we have to do it at home, I’m not subjecting us to Cathy’s cooking."
Ned turned to Bette, who sat beside Tina. "It’s really bad."
Paul nodded his agreement.
"Why don’t you have it here?" Karen, Paul’s wife, asked.
"Kids." Tina pointed out. She paused, then glanced around, as if suddenly realizing something. "Where did Nick and Nora go?"
"Asleep." Karen answered.
They had gotten to Paul’s house late, only briefly meeting Paul and Karen’s children, who had been beside themselves when they met someone who worked in movies. Love for cinema, it seemed, had been fostered by their father, and they’d barely blinked when Bette had been introduced as their aunt’s partner.
There was also that little victory for Tina over Ned when the position of toy designer was not met with as much enthusiasm.
Karen looked at her sister-in-law pointedly. "I don’t care what you did as a teen, Tina, but my children aren’t sneaking out on a school night."
Tina turned to Bette to explain. "Karen here, before becoming Paul’s wife, was my sidekick."
"Your sidekick?" Karen exclaimed.
"You’re gonna talk to Mom?" Paul asked his sister, knowing better than to address the ‘sidekick’ label. "When did you decide this?"
"Yesterday." Tina answered, picking up her mug of tea. "And she and I made the date earlier. Look, it’s bad enough we even have to go through this. I just want it over and done with."
Ned shrugged. "Dinner’s fine."
Karen turned to Bette. "Are you going?"
"If T asks properly," Bette said jokingly, giving a look of innocence to the blonde’s mock glare. "You’re the one who always says I shouldn’t make plans without consulting you first."
"Oh, now you listen," Tina retorted, before smiling at her.
"Amazing how your whole name has been shortened to just one letter," Paul shook his head at his sister.
Karen turned to Tina. "I’m really sorry about Paul being silent for so long. He can be an ass."

awesome, can’t wait to read the rest of the story.
I don’t know if you watch “Brothers and Sisters” but this convo is reminiscent of the dialogue that transpires on the show. Most excellent. The family dynamics and all.
Yum! So delisciously good…as always! You are going to complete Bette’s “side of the story”, yes? Please…please! The subtle humor between Tibette was great…one can imagine the stolen looks they give each other, it’s part of their special connection. You capture it so brilliantly!
Love the siblings’ reconnection. Will we be privy to Bette’s perspective of how she and Tina met? PPS
It was good to stop by the site and see you had updated the story! Keep them coming!!
Hmmm…I see poor Cathy not only has had to live a long time with a stick up her ass, turns out it has both thorns and splinters.
tiff, I hope you’re going to give us Bette’s side next time. But if you don’t, then I hope it’s the throwdown, knuckle-bruising fight at that dinner at the homestead lol. I was saddened for Cathy. Yes, she’s a total bitch and it’s not Tina’s fault that she wasn’t the one people expected more from, but it must have been hard to always feel less than. I almost (almost, but not quite) want Tina to show her that her marriage to Bette also broke up. That just because she struck out and lived the life she wanted to, it doesn’t mean that it was always easy or that she got everything she wanted. But then the woman is such a snake she’ll probably rejoice in the failure rather than accept the comfort, so no story for Cathy :P Loved this. PPS!
Please complete Bettes perspective of THE beginning, and PPS.
Great dialogue, you had me smiling at the end.
That’s a terrible thing to have had happen to Cathy… And I do understand her feeling like she was never one of the “blessed” amongst the Kennard kids, but still. Her behavior toward Tina has been… unsupportive, to say the least. But, maybe that went two ways. They don’t seem close, she and Tina (or with either of her brothers, for that matter), but there’s still time to fix that. If she’s willing to try, that is. Great family scenes here. And the tale of their beginning… it is a good one. But who knows? Maybe the future can be even better. Thanks for the post, tiff. :)
Tiff…you make the simplest of things so very interesting. Here are all the siblings just sitting around chatting and what pops out…Cathy’s history, Tina’s childhood with Karen and Bette and Tina meeting for the first time and all in 3.5 pages! You are magnificent!
u left me hanging…i so do want to hear more of Bette’s version of ‘their’ story. Perfect as usual.
love it! one of my fav stories! can’t wait to hear Bette’s version :)
Yes, Bette has never told the story. Tina’s other relatives are civilized, what happened to her mother and sister? Oh, you told us in this chapter…Enjoyable, as always. I wish I could just pull up a chair to the table and hear Bette’s tale. Thanks!
I can’t wait to hear more of Bette’s glance back to the beginning. I look forward to the next chapter and the talk between the family.
Clap Clap Clap! Thank you Tiff. Am first to comment too! That was a really nice chat between them all, and I’m so glad Bette was there too. Are we going to be enlightened by Bette’s narrative of how they got together? Please post soon!
Nice update…love the siblings reconnecting….so sweet to hear Bette tell ‘their’ story! Let the catered torture begin! PPS!
Now, I know why Cathy is such a bitch towards her siblings. I can give her some sympathy. Ned and Alice should hook up. I enjoyed the update. PPS
Glorious. Just…too brief, way too brief :-). PPS!
What a lovely update! I’ve been enjoying the progression of this story! I can’t wait to hear the rest of bettes version and tina’s reaction to the story being told. Unless of course we just jump right into the dinner which will be a bit awkward necessary! Great job PPS
Great update. Nice to see Bette’s continued support of Tina in all ways. Now the baby steps to mending their relationship. Can’t wait for dinner!
I always wished we could hear the story of their meeting from Bette’s pov too. I loved Tina’s and wanted to see what Bette remembered from that fateful night :-) Great conversation – I love seeing Tina with her family, thank you for creating this story for her and them.
Just great Tiff just awesome.. Nice conversation flow amongst the group. I am starting to feel a little bad for sister usually its the middle child that fields left out and I bet Tina mom wasn’t most comforting mother to live with..
Brilliant update. Liked how the siblings reconnected and Bette being there. Are we going to hear Bette’s side of their story? Please! Wow! the dinner is going to be something else :) Thank you again!
i just love these library meetings and great conversations, and Bette being there for support and more…just love it…i kinda feel sad for Cathy though, it’s tough being a lonely bitch
I am scooping up up all your delicious dialogue…then I’m going to put them in little Ziplock Bags and keep them in the freezer, so whenever I need a little treat…a little pick me up, I can take a bag out, sink into the couch and be totally and completely gratified!! Thank you for sharing this treat with us!
Thanks for the update. I hope we get to hear Bette retelling the story of how they got together. Bringing up some good memories should help them to heal.
Very nice.
No! You stopped in the wrong place. :) That was like a tease. I love Bette and Tina begginigs and you stopped. I was getting excited there for a minute. It was the story within the story. :( More on their beginning PLEASE. I love the conersation in this chapter the brothers were funny. I loved the first lines about catering the torture event. :) And when Paul told her that she was indeed the sidekick. It was nice to have a bit of humor in the story that has been great but so serious so far :) Thanks for the update. More please. :)
im speechless. you have all the words!!! i love this totally. cant wait to have bette tell the story. thx
That was great and like it, B&T are cute. Now let see the family dinners coming. Please post more, thanks!
