Life and Love and Why – 5

Tina stood in the hallway, Ned and Paul sitting on the same worn chairs that their sister and mother sat on just hours before; her two brothers catching up while she stood there, watching nurses examine their father’s vitals and checking the different monitors that seemed to tell them everything there was to know about their father’s condition.

Everybody liked to joke that she was his favorite, his little sidekick, tagging along wherever he went. When she’d been little, he had brought her everywhere, since Catherine was very independent, Paul was such a bookworm and Ned had no attention span to speak of. He had taught her how to fish, how to set up camp, how to play poker. They would sometimes let Ned come along, but he didn’t like the dirty work. It was her dad who made her appreciate gardens, brought her along to the weekend market and festivals.

Which was why, Tina supposed, she’d felt so betrayed he’d just stood there, not defending her, not interceding, when her mother had given her the lecture of her life when she’d told them about Bette.

Thanksgiving. And her friends — ex-friends — wondered why she didn’t make more of an effort during Thanksgiving anymore.

She could still remember walking down to the rental car, not looking back, while Bette gave her mother a piece of her mind, telling the older Kennard she would regret shunning her youngest daughter.

In the plane heading back to LA, Tina had vowed to herself two things: one, she would never take any of her own children’s choices against them, and two, that she would return her mother the favor and never refer to her family again.

Her parents had always told her she was too stubborn for her own good, and she lived up to the reputation.

She’d sent one olive branch every Christmas for the past two years, sending her parents a photo of Angelica, basically telling them that this was what they were missing out on: to be a part of the life of their grandchild.

She never heard back, and she’d decided that while she could accept them turning their backs on her, to ignore Angelica was simply unacceptable.

    1. Whoaa, that was really good! You could feel the tension between them in the dialogue…each not wanting to say the wrong thing but wanting to know more about each other. Magnificent Tiff, PPS!

    2. Bette same league as Helena? I do love your Helena, but please no! Ya know, everytime Tina and Bette talks, I have a grin on my face. Do you think Tina will let Bette know her whereabouts next?

    3. I have always loved the way you write Angelica. She is such a cutie. Of course I love how complex you write Bette and Tina’s relationship. There is that underlining love that is shared. The only problem is, they are unwilling to voice this love.

    4. Thank you for a great update. Love the way you write the conversations but please don’t put Bette & Helena in the same league. Great story thank you :)

    5. Okay… Bette ≠ Helena. In fact, generally, Bette > Helena ; Bette || Hels. Except, of course, when Bette’s being utterly myopic and selfish (it happens, more than occasionally), and Helena’s in one of her imperious “everything and everyone bows to me” heiress modes, then I’d go so far as to stretch it to Bette ≈ Hels. Thus concludeth this geeky comment. Umm. Thanks for the chapter, tiff.

    6. yeaah, i like what u do too. was that somewhat of a breakthru convo? i am hoping so. and yes, in my book! Helena and Bette r in the same league…a pair of hunnies!!

    7. I’m extremely happy that Jodi wasn’t in this reading or even mentioned. My heart is breaking for these two. As toby4ever mentioned you could feel the tension. I wish Tina would tell Bette where she is and why. I am so loving this story. Please continue.

    8. Yes they can have a civilized conversation, but the tension is so thick! Bette is unhappy that she’s in the same league with Helena while Tina’s happy that Angelica’s the only one in bed with Bette. Can’t wait to see how the rest of their conversations go. Will Tina open up with Bette when her dad shuns her once he wakes up? Great update! PPS

    9. Love this story. If only they would just admit they both still care very much and want to be together. jodi needs to disappear. Thanks for posting.

    10. TIff–the dialog was excellent but broke my heart. These women must get better at sharing their feelings, taking personal responsibility for what happened, and Tina really needs to allow people to be there for her. The WeHo group, they’ve been her family, time they step up and show it and not be what her blood family seems to have become. Excellent and thanks for the post!

    11. the depth of your dialogue has always amazed me! must have been painful for tina to say that bette is in the same league as helena. but i’m really glad they got to talk.
