Life and Love and Why – 7

Tina glanced at Ned. "Are you OK?"

"I think I went through that burger too quickly," Ned said faintly, looking a little green. "I’ll be fine as long as nothing makes it come up in the next few hours."

"Why didn’t you just pack it up so you can eat it later?" Tina asked, worried. "You didn’t have to finish it in two seconds."

"I’ll be fine." Ned said again. "What do they put in those burgers?"

"Damn good beef?" Tina guessed, finding her brother at least partly amusing. "You wanna sit down?"

    Ned looked at her.

    "What?"

Ned shook his head. "I’m glad to see that you at least find my situation amusing."

"Only for you, Big Brother." Tina answered. She stopped walking, noticing something. "Is that Paul’s car?"

Ned looked up just in time as the aforementioned car skidded to a stop beside them, breaking at least two traffic laws and nearly running down the two siblings. Paul leaned across to the passenger side, opening the door. "Get in. They’re bringing Dad in for the operation now."

"What?" Tina practically shoved Ned aside as she got in the passenger seat. "Why didn’t they tell us earlier?"

"I don’t know," Paul said, watching Ned. "What’s wrong with you?"

"He ate too fast." Tina answered, putting on her seatbelt.

    "Steak?" Paul guessed.

    "Burger." Ned moaned.

"After finishing a rack of ribs," Tina told Paul.

Paul made a face. "Ned, that’s just disgusting."

"It was so good," Ned said dreamily, before remembering his stomach’s condition, then turning back to his shade of green.

"So: dad." Tina reminded Paul. "What did they say?"

"I don’t know, but considering they were scheduling him for later tonight," Paul glanced at Tina. "This can’t be good."

Arriving at the hospital, the three practically raced to their father’s hospital room, where their mother and eldest sister waited as the nurses prepared to wheel off the bed.

    "Right on time," Catherine noted.

Ned looked at her oddly, then turned to their father. "Hey, Dad."

"He’s already started going under," the nurse told him.

    "What happened?" Paul asked.

The answer was lost to Tina, whose gaze met her father’s, startled that he was looking at her with such focus, such clarity, that if she hadn’t caught that he was already on drugs, she would think that he was…

    1. I’m amazed at the emotional intensity you are able to convey between B and T just through their simple 5 minute phone conversation. Jennifer and Laurel did that so well in the TV show– very short scenes when you think about it but enormous emotional impact. In your writing, all that’s said is there, but you are able to leverage all that’s unsaid between them as well to create intensity. A beautiful job even if it’s painful for us readers. Thank you.

    2. I was just about to shout out and say ‘trace the call Bette!’. But now, I see it better. Tina has to come to Bette instead of Bette gong to Tina. Tina never asked to be saved, she just needs some time to process things, personal things. She needs to work through this in her own way and time – Bette just has to be there; firstly as a friend…if only as a friend.

    3. that was a heartbreaking yet hopeful conversation between them. you once again captured the underlying emotions brilliantly. hopefully bette will pick up something on tina’s ‘family’ comment. really great writing, tiff. can’t wait for the next one!

    4. sometimes its best to just get it out in the open. what happened to tina dad shows you never know whats gonna happen. dont let thoughts and feelings go unsaid. thx

    5. What a bummer, just when it looked like Tina was allowing Bette closer to her, James comes cruising in and interrupts their silent conversation. I wish that Tina would open up to Bette and let her know where and why she is at her childhood home. They are a family and will always be a family.

    6. So glad that Tina called Bette but I so wish that she would tell her where she is and why. Bad timing on James’ part but at least Tina knows that Bette still cares for her. Let Tina mellow a little and tell Bette or someone tell Bette where she is and why. Can hardly wait for the next chapter. Thanks for posting.

    7. I wish Bette would put two and two together and figure out where she is. Bette is the one that would really understand her emotions because Bette knows what happened. Ned may just have to be the one to intervene here to get them on the right track. Tiff, that was a super update!

    8. Oh, such abysmal timing by James. One good thing though, that Bette’s still the default number… Another good thing: Bette, I think, got across that she definitely still cares about Tina, and vice versa. Good. Reassuring. Not reassuring, are the other Kennard women. Cathy and Clarissa… it’s not the time to be sniping, and yet, that’s what they’re doing. Hopefully that operation goes well and Mr K sorts them all out, even in his weakened state. Great update, thanks for the post, tiff.

    9. Love your writing! Tina’s mom and sis need to chill out. How can she treat her own children like that? Bette needs to come on and figure out where T is and go to her. Can’t wait for the next chapter. PPS

    10. Gee…what the hell is wrong with Cathy? I thought when there’s a crisis in the family, siblings usually rally together, and put away whatever shit they had from the past.Tina called Bette!!!! Yipeee! And they’re talking, and I can just visualise that scene. Tiff…when it comes to the them talking…you reign supreme! These two talking..definitely made sense. Please post soon. Thanks!!

    11. I really happy that Tina called Bette instead of Helena. I wish Tina would tell Bette whats happening. Her mother and sister are such idiots. I hope their father has a chance to talk to Ned and Tina before their mother pisses them off and they leave. Awesome story. I love it. Please continue.

    12. i love everything about your writing. Both Tina and Bette’s angst is understated yet heart wrenching…hopefully when Bette has replayed their conversation for the nth time in her head she’ll connect Tina’s needing to hear her voice and thinking about ‘family.’ Love the pace of this story.

    13. Great chapter, thank you. The conversation between B&T was heartbreaking and hopeful. Tina’s mom and sister need to have those poles removed from their a**es — jeez. Post soon! I can’t wait to see how the Kennard drama unfolds.

    14. Bette would provide the support that Tina needs and is not getting from her siblings. Bette was always ferociously protective of Tina even if she acted like an ass at times. But, hey, that’s part of Bette’s charm. :-) Bette would be by Tina’s side in a NY minute b/c she really values family.

    15. Tina’s coversation with Bette was so sad. I hope Bette realizes soon that Tina really needs her. Tina’s sister and mother need a smack upside the head, well at least she has her brothers, and maybe her dad. Great story, PPS.

    16. yes, sometimes families can be cruel…and why jodi always ruins everything even when she’s not present? LOL it made me happy that Tina called Bette and not Helena for comfort…should be interesting to see what’s next…you do write the best dialogs :)

    17. I’ll admit at most times my family can be assholes but when a crisis comes to play we band together around it. What the heck is wrong with the elder Kennard women.. I hope Tina father makes it out so that he can speak with Ned and Tina. I love the fact that at the end of the day the voice of calm and reason for Tina is Bette. Since it doesn’t sound like Tina will be involving Bette or any or her friends as to whats going on with the family i am hoping that Bette hears Ned or someone in the background as to any indication of where Tina is and go to her. ..Nice update

    18. I’m always amazed at how quickly and fully I’m drawn in to your stories. I’m lovin’ every moment of this one. Thanks for sharing it and for the frequent posts!

    19. Great update. I can’t believe how Tina’s mum and sister are to them. Christ! Love how Tina called Bette! I hope Tina tells Bette where she is soon and Bette comes to be with her. Thank you again and can’t wait to see what happens :)

    20. Believe me, I know times like that can be very stressful, but just what crawled up Cathy’s ass? Interesting that Tina turns to Bette for comfort in the midst of all the turmoil.

    21. Ah, families. Over the years I’ve gotten more and more gratitude about being an only child! But I’ve always liked the Ned/Tina connection from previous stories. Tiff, can you give me a little more sense of why Tina is so adamant in not letting Bette know where she is? Just me getting ahead of the story probably…
