Life Happens: London Can’t Get Rid of These Two

“No more budget trips. Ok?” Bette’s sarcasm was gentled with a smile and a pat on the thigh.

“Ok.” Helena shrugged, sipping her tea. “mmmm…finally, some decent tea. Next time we’ll have money to spare. This was a little bit last minute, you have to admit.”

Wilson interrupted with a barrage of questions, squirming in his seat and craning his neck to look around.

“Mummy, when is Mama coming to visit? Where are we going now? Are we going to your apartment? Where is your apartment?”

Jun Ying laughed at her brother’s strange need to ask repetitive questions. She looked at Bette and shrugged as if to say ‘whatever’.

“Wilson,” Helena lifted the boy into her lap. “Winn…Mama, is coming to visit in one week. We are on our way to our flat which is in East London. That, my darling, is the beauty of gentrification—we have a lovely flat in East London.” Her sarcasm, while missed on Wilson, evoked a snort of laughter from Bette.

“Should we call everyone?” Bette asked.

    “I already did.”

Bette sighed.  Jun Ying looked expectantly at her, wondering if this was the start of a fight. “Why did you call everyone, when we were supposed to be sneaking away?” Bette’s voice remained casual. This surprised her more than anything else could have: she trusted Helena’s instincts, despite the strangeness of their retreat.

“I didn’t feel right about it.” Came the response. Helena averted her eyes into her cup of tea. A swirl of white milk made it’s way deeper into the hot liquid. When she met Bette’s eyes again, she found reassurance there. “I wasn’t running away from my friends. I’m running away from the law.”

“Breakin’ the law, breakin’ the law.” Jun Ying sang sleepily. Bette grinned.

“How does she know that song?” She asked, before realizing the answer to her own question.

    “Alice.” They responded simultaneously.

It was nearing midnight when they finally made their way to Helena’s flat. The children slept in what would have been the spare room, had Helena seen fit to acquire furniture for it.  Bette’s urge to pack sleeping bags from their recent camping trip had turned out to be useful.

    1. Though ITA with Bette (and The Guardian’s Henry Porter) that Britain is slipping into totalitarianism, she should resist the urge to advertise the fact at Gatwick Airport. Sadly, as far as I know, EZ is still a producer. She wrote at least one of S4’s episodes and I detect her baleful influence in the S5 previews. Sorry I caused you such (perfectly understandable) alarm with the whispering Jenny scare, but you seem to have nipped the condition in the bud. And that, as Martha would say, is a good thing.

    2. Aww I wish we could have this pairing on the show. Er no I don’t…cuz then it would just be effed up by IC instead of being nurtured by the wonderful HB.

    3. Bette and Jun Ying’s airport banter was funny, to say the least…they seem so good together…it was cute…I can see Phyllis being very excited about the move, being that she’s a newbie and pretty excited about all things lesbian…pps

    4. OK, alright, no orgies. I wouldn’t want you to do anything contrary to your principles. If 4 is the cut off, I say ditch Jody and get Debbie! Well, a whole new life in London and a lot less baby sitters. At least Peggy’s on the case to get things sorted out. But Bette really needs to cool it in airports these days. If she was antsy with the usual customs line, just think how long they could detain her with the politcal comments, all in the name of antiterrorism. What’s the point of springing Helena from jail just to get Bette back behind bars (and possibly getting it on with fellow inmates in a masturbatory, wall-facing way)?

    5. oh, no, i don’t have a principled stand *against* orgies, i just find the concept of having one, boring. but i’m feeling like this might be turning into a challenge…i could have helena and bette attend an orgy in london somewhere. hmmm…
