Life In Perpetual Spin – 02.07

She opened her blue eyes to the smell of smoke, burning rubber and gas. Then the pain, the sheering hot pain that ripped through her body, she tried to focus her eyes, but it was far too painful. There was a stinging pain in her eyes, and she realized it was blood. She reached up to wipe it away.

She was upside down, the car on the roof, her feet pointing up in the air. She got the surreal feeling of all the blood rushing to her head, and she wasn’t sure she enjoyed it at all.

                She turned, looking at
Marina who was in the driver’s seat and came face to face with her lifeless eyes. She heard someone at her right, someone that was asking her how she was, the smell of gas getting worse.

“I’ll never be all right again.” She muttered, and the crowd began to scatter, as a loud bang, then the smell of smoke. The young man was grabbing at the seat belt that held her suspended from the seat.

“GET BACK…” Some yelled and Jenny turned, her hand reaching out to the young man who was scurrying away from her. Then she saw the flames from the other car, the car that they’d gone careening into. She saw the flame licking at the spilled gasoline and she knew she was drawing her last breath. She reached over and clasped Marina’s dead limp hand.

                “It’s a joke,
April fools joke or something.” Alice kept muttering and Dana shook her head, she didn’t have anymore tears to spill. She was just numb with it all. All this death, there was no love left. She’d been sitting with Shane when she’d gotten the call, another one of them dead. Two more gone.

                “No, it’s not a joke
Al, they are dead.” Dana said going over to where Kit was, she was trying in desperation to contact Marina’s family. She’d already spoken to Jenny‘s family, and they were beside themselves with the devastating news.

Alice couldn’t believe it, had they all been wrong? What could C.J. have against them all? There was no way this was a murder, it was a car accident, right?

Alice reached back and pulled out her cell phone. She dialed Jo Wheaton’s number as she held her breath. Sam really hadn’t been the killer after all, had she?

Lara tried to force her eyes open, the phone was ringing, but her bed partner answered it first. Lara opened her eyes to feast on the sight of her lean athletic body and tussled blonde hair.

                “
Wheaton.” Jo said, turning away from Lara and Lara closed her eyes, feeling the guilt riding up into her throat again. She sighed, getting up from the tangled mess of a bed and slipping into her clothes.   “How the hell did this happen? No, I’ll… Be there in a few…” Jo said, turning and looking at Lara, who was dressed. Lara felt the hot rush inside of her at the sound of Jo’s voice, no longer her own, but of Sam’s. Of this, Lara was sure. She felt utterly guilty at all that was going on, but she just couldn’t help herself.

Jo bit her lip and dressed quickly, dark jeans and a loose dark tee shirt. Lara was staring at a picture of Jo and the other ladies in her life. Darci Haim, now Cyr, Emma Young, now Scott, Shelby Pryde and of course, Amy Astin the love of Jo Wheaton‘s life.

“I broke up with her… But she’s still in my life…”
Jo explained and Lara put the picture down, and laughed ruefully.

                “For me?”
Lara asked, and Jo shook her head no.

“No. For me.” Jo said softly, “We have to go to the Planet. Marina and Jenny were killed in a car accident. I’m on my way to check the car out, I’ll have to pull some strings, but I want to see that car.”

Alex and C.J. were packing the back of Alex‘s car with hiking gear. They were off for a two day trip into the woods. Vanessa and Tim were in Vancouver for the next two months, Vanessa shooting her series Earthlings.

C.J. threw the last of the stuff into the trunk and Alex threw her the keys.

“You drive hot shot.” Alex smiled and C.J. shrugged, putting the cooler into the back seat.
Alex reached in and grabbed a water.

“You are so sweet, you brought me my Propell.”
C.J. simply nodded and saw her taking a Poland Springs instead, she smiled.

They drove in comfortable silence and in two hours were parked in an old road, far off the beaten path. They shrugged their backpacks on and headed into the woods.
Alex always weary of her new prosthetic leg, she kept her eyes down, making sure of her every step.

                Seven miles and
Alex couldn’t go any more; she threw herself onto the cool pine needle ladled ground and spread her arms out.

“Oh god I’m tired.” She exclaimed and
C.J. sat on the ground, tucking her legs under her. She watched as Alex took out a bottle of water and downed half of it in one long gulp.

“You’ll have plenty of time to rest.”
C.J. said in a stoic tone of voice and Alex sat up, pushing up against the tree behind her and removing her leg. She tossed it aside and massaged her stub.

                “Oh yeah? Good, I’m beat.”
Alex quipped, finishing off the bottle of water, she tossed it playfully to C.J. and she caught it. Her head cocked to the left and studying the detective.

“Were you a good detective at one point Alex?”
C.J. asked and Alex blinked, she didn’t like the tone. She reached back for her gun, the remembered, she didn’t have it. She dug into her pocket, feeling the switchblade she had hidden there. The shape a comfort.

                “Yeah, I was.”

“Was, because you trusted me, didn’t you?”
Alex pushed up on her good leg, grabbing her fake one with her hand, and feeling weak. C.J. got up, smiling wickedly as Alex shook her head. The dizziness taking over as she fought the nausea.

“In a few minutes, the electrolytes in your sports drink will carry the drugs into your system, full force. You’ll feel sick, and then you’ll feel nothing. You’ll be awake, but nothing will hurt. I promise, well not to much anyway. I’ve doctored your medical files, saying you were rather depressed at the fact that you could no longer be a cop, so this little suicide will make so much sense to everyone. Including me, who couldn’t make it to our hiking date, because I was called to an emergency….”

Alex tried to talk, her leg giving way and she tried to move her hand, it was numb. Totally unable to move, she screamed in her skull, not even able to do that.

                “Why…”
Alex managed and C.J. smiled, she moved to her, kneeling and looking at the panic in the detective’s eyes.

“Why? Because I like it! But this is the ends to a means, I am after something. I was after Sam’s money. I have over 10 million of it now and another five when the gang finds out that Jenny and Marina are dead.” Alex’s eyes flashed, and C.J. chuckled.  “Yes, poor things. The brakes went out on
Marina‘s car. Poor things but as I was saying. I was after the money, at first. Now I want something much more precious than that, and in four days, I’ll have it.” C.J. said, as the turned hearing a noise behind her.

“Hey baby…” C.J. said and her partner walked into her arms and
Alex‘s eyes went wide, seeing who was in cahoots with C.J..

                “M…mmm…”
Alex tried to say, but Pez couldn’t talk anymore, she felt herself being hoisted up, they tied her up in a semi standing position.

                “The wolves are ravenous here
Alex, I’m sure you won’t mind if we… Invite them…” C.J.’s partner said and Alex tried to yell, struggled but to no avail. C.J. too her own knife, wearing latex gloves and cut two long lashes in her wrists. From her wrists to her elbows. Alex felt nothing, no pain, just anger at not being able to meet Vanessa‘s child.

Anger and frustration that she’d been taken in, but there were two of them now. Two of them two cold blooded killers still out on the loose wanting and needing to kill. They cut the ropes that held her, letting her slump to the ground. She knew that all the foot prints would be gone by the time she was found, the wolves, or coyotes would take care of that.

“Have a nice day detective; we do know how you enjoy being eaten….” Was the last thing that
    Alex remembered hearing.

Tina sat at the pool, her toes dangling in the pool as she thought about all she’d lost. She’d lost Rosita, Bette, and now Jenny and Marina. Who was next? Was she next? Was she going to die too?

Tina had to pick up Angelina on Friday, four days until her baby girl was in this house, and she sighed. She hadn’t even seen her yet, she couldn’t make herself go in there and see the child that seemed to have brought on more death.

She got up, no more tears could spill from her eyes, she was beyond sad, depressed and in the edge of reason. Yes, she was beyond reason, wasn’t she? After all that she’d done, she was to far gone to be redeemed. She threw herself on the bed and felt into a fitful sleep.
