Sheer Bliss – See You In The Clouds
    _______________________________________________________

    "I have to say goodbye.
    A desperate need to cry."

It was not the best of times.

Waiting in the lobby, Carmen’s words kept replaying in Shane’s mind.  Upon walking in and seeing both Carmen and Shay waiting for her, in the midst of her grief she was shell shocked.  In that moment of sorrow and confusion is when Shane heard those words that play in a constant loop in her thoughts.  "I’m here, because I know you’re going to need a friend.  And Shay’s here, because he now needs a sister."  Shane didn’t know what to make of it.  She still doesn’t.  Shay sits quietly in a hospital lobby seat, playing video games on a handheld console, while Shane, Carmen and Lara hope for the best while preparing for the worst.  Carmen clutches at Shane’s right arm as she sits beside her.  With all that has happened in the last 24 hours, their failed attempt at a wedding is the least of her concern.  Her concern instead lies in an ICU room, where one visitor is allowed in for the one person who continues to battle for her life.

While Shane and Carmen wipe away the occassional tear, Lara sits alone and quiet, with baby Angelica in her arms.  She thinks back to meeting up with Bette, Shane and Carmen at Jenny’s house.  By the time Lara had arrived there, her emotions were already shot.  They were shot to the point where no tears could come out, regardless of her sadness.  She wasn’t sure what she was doing here anymore.  While others mourn those dearly departed, Lara wonders why she was spared by nothing more than a simple decision.

Bette Porter has been through a lot in a very short span of time.  Being questioned by the police and investigators and conferring with Joyce over a number of issues, from being able to assume custody of Angelica to who winds up with Kit’s share of the Planet.  The entire time, all Bette could think of was the fact that her sister, her friends and the love of her life had perished.  Now, she stands in a hospital room alone with the one person left breathing from the crash, as the nurse exits for a few moments.  She lies still in the bed, her body kept alive through various tubes.  She had been unconscious since being discovered and rescued in the wreckage.  Bette stands over her, wiping away a tear as she sees her friend’s eyes slowly open.  Bette leans in, caressing her friend’s forehead and hair with her right hand.

    Bette: …Hel….Helena..?

Her voice is but a soft, weak whisper as her eyes turn to Bette.

    Helena: Hey…  Waiting….waiting for me….

Bette isn’t sure how to respond.

    Bette: …What?

    Helena: …They’re waiting for me…

Bette tries to hold back the tears as she kisses Helena on the forehead, smiling.

Bette: We’ve been waiting.  We got….we got Shane and Carmen…and Lara….they’re all out in the lobby.

Helena: …I saw them all, Bette.  They were all with Dana…

Bette finds it harder to hold back.

Helena: I….bloody refused.  Not without saying goodbye…

Bette: Helena…no.  This isn’t goodbye.  You understand me?  This isn’t.

    Helena smiles.

Helena: Thank you, Bette…you and all of my friends.  You all made this life worh the trouble, really…

    Bette: Helena…

    Helena: …Tell my children hello….that I love them…and their mother…and mine…

Bette whispers her plea in defiance.

    Bette: …You’re not leaving, too…

    Helena: …and that…Dylan’s forgiven…

    Bette: Helena….don’t you dare…

    Helena: …You’re a good person, Bette…

Helena’s voice trails off as her eyes close and her grin remains.  She’s at peace now.  A high, constant beep noise is heard and nurses immediately rush into the room.

    Bette: Helena!!!

It’s all a blur.  Medical staff do what they can to resusitate her, but it’s of know use.  All Bette can do is watch in the background.

Lara, Carmen and Shane and all stand as Bette emerges, her arms crossed and her body shaking.  Shane meets Bette puts her right arm around her shoulders.

    Shane: How is she…?

Carmen: Is she okay?  Please say she’s okay…

Bette closes her eyes and looks down as the friends huddle together and Shay looks on, curious.

    Bette: She’s gone…they’re….all gone…

The four friends lean against each other as their only support left in this World.  They’re all they have left.

"So long, I’ll see you in the clouds.
So long, our last time here and now."

    1. … You know, I don’t want you to take this wrong way, because this is SO well written, but I’m not sure why I’m reading it still… it’s so bleak… and yet, I can’t seem to look away. I’m totally drawn in, wondering where it can go, what it will examine. Guess I’m in the haul, however painful it is.

    2. Damn and here I was hoping it was Tina in the ICU. Not that I wanted Helena to die mind you. On a lighter note, could you imagine Dana being like, “Oh thank God you’re here, Kit! The coffee here sucks!”

    3. You couldn’t have, could you? All of them gone? Angelica lost her other mommy and her auntie? It’s a Jenny story for The New Yorker, right? A screenplay for a movie Tina is producing? A nightmare Bette is having after eating bad roadside food while on the lam? The single bright spot is that Henry is dead, too. Mikey can’t ask for any more family pictures (insert sick and evil grin here). This one’s gonna hurt but I am strapped into my seat for the ride. In a car, not a plane. Thanks for your story.

    4. they’re all gone…oh no, say it aint so..waaah, can’t wait to see where you are taking this. Waiting in anticipation because I know you have something quality up your sleeve—pps! Sniff….

    5. This is certainly different. Bleak and dark. I like. It’s tragic that everyone is gone. Did Peggy die too? I’m very curious to see where this goes. So far you have me feeling quite bad right along with the remaining four. Great job. There’s gotta be a light at the end of the tunnel, right?
