Living for Love
The doctor yelled ‘Clear’ as he put the defibrillator pads on Dana’s chest. They set the charge to minimum to avoid overshock. Her body jumped an inch off the bed. There was no pulse. There was no heartbeat.
Alice was just turning around the corner with her arms full of goodies from the gift shop. She thought it might be good if Dana woke up to "You Are My Sunshine" from the singing flower. She still couldn’t get over seeing Tonya. She looked up to see the doctors and nurses running into Dana’s room. When she reached the window, and saw Dana being shocked, the knew something was wrong. Alice dropped everything in the hallway and ran to Dana’s bedside.
‘Dana! Dana, wake up! Dana, please dear God, wake up! Dana!’ she yelled. Her hands clinched onto Dana’s. It took three orderlies and two nurses to tear her apart before the doctor used the defibrillator again.
‘Set at maximum’ the doctor said.
The doctor yelled ‘Clear’ and Alice screamed ‘Dana!’ just as she was shocked.
Dana popped up in a sitting position with her eyes and mouth open. Not a sound came out of her or the people in the room. It was dead silent. The orderlies let go of Alice and she ran right to Dana. Dana’s eyes didn’t blink and her mouth stayed open. She didn’t move as though she were rock solid. And a minute after waking up, she let out a scream that would’ve outdone Al Pacino in "Godfather III" and Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill Vol. 1". Everybody in the ER to the waiting room heard it and they were frightened. The whole gang was in their own zones and they were silent with fear and anticipation. But nothing could’ve prepared them for what could happen next. In Dana’s room, the two lovers held each other with all their strength crying oceans of tears.
‘I Love You’ was said over and over against all the pain and joy they were feeling. Dana crashed into the bed with her eyes still open. Alice’s gently sang "Save the Best for Last" by Vanessa Williams. They couldn’t recover from everything and they didn’t let go of each other. Alice kept on crying and saying ‘I Love You’ and hoping that Dana could hear her. Dana heard Alice and she felt it. Dana gently pulled Alice toward her head and whispered ‘I Love You’.
In the waiting room, Jenny was pacing in front of Kit and Angus who were praying. Bette was stone faced with sadness while trying to be strong for everyone as usual. Tina and Henry were sitting beside her with Angelica. Shane and Carmen kept looking at the floor. Everybody’s mind was on Dana, asking the same question ‘What is going on?’
Jenny turned around, looking at the floor, then she saw a pair of hospital boots, a figure in a blue blanket, and Alice. She couldn’t make out the figure so she took a few steps closer. Everybody noticed she stopped pacing and saw that she was moving towards Alice and the figure. Kit gasped for air and squeezed Angus’ hands. Jenny lifted up the blanket to reveal the figures face with her heart beating in her throat. It was Dana. The whole family gave a gentle group hug and Dana was overcome with love, joy, and sadness. She knew that this was her family and they knew that she was alive with love.
Dana asked everybody to step back because she wanted to say something. She only got out a whisper.
‘I am not going to be brought down by some disease that does not know malice or mercy. The fate of my life will be decided as it should be…. in Mortal Kombat. But I will not go down easy and I will not go down alone.’

Wow!! Go Dana! Thanks!
I just got Showtime this month- and became instantly addicted to The L Word. The first season was awesome- inspiring, hilarious, real! The second season was also great- although I was thoroughly heartbroken that Marina did not continue to be part of the storyline. My experience of the third season was that it really lost something- it became really heavy- a little too heavy. I can’t believe that the writers killed off one of the main characters- Dana- what a loss for the show! She was such an important piece of the show- I mean come on! It really kindof dissapointed me and made me really angry. I even considered bannoing the show. Why all the drama? Why couldn’t her cancer be a lesson for all- that women can prevail? I was looking forward to Aliced and Dana connecting (love Alice) in the future. I hope that the writers lighten up a little in season four. I turn to tv to escape from the challenges of life- and lose myself in the laughter.
yay! I really hope you continue this.
That was intense! Please keep going.
Beautifully written Boy Toy, a very good first chapter. I look forward to reading the next chapter. =)
