After the zoo in the Porter household.

“Finally she is out for the count” spoke Bette as she made her way back into the kitchen where Sam was waiting, he had quickly thrown together supper for Bette.

“I hope you don’t mind but we’ve had a long day and I thought you might like something to eat and also I took the liberty in opening a bottle of wine as you look like you need to unwind”

“Aww, this is really sweet Sam thank you.  You definitely did right opening the bottle of wine but I’ll only drink it if you join me”

“Oh Betty I thought you’d never ask”

“Easy on the Betty, Sam, you know damn well that Alex is the only one that calls me that” laughed Bette.

With that the two friends sat down to supper and aimlessly chatted about the day’s events.  Talking about Alex’s amazement with the fish and meeting Alice’s new girlfriend Dana.

Sam feeling brave again and with the wine giving him Dutch courage he asked once more.

“Bette, how come Alex has come to live with you and what happened to her?  How did she end up like this?”

Bette looked away; knowing she has avoided this for too long turned back to Sam and simply spoke:

“Ok mister are you ready for this?”

“I am and take your time; I am here for you Bette.  Bette as well as being my boss you really have become a good friend to me.”

“Sam you’re an absolute pleasure and dream to work with and I know that Allie loves you, but I guess after all this time you deserve to know what happened”

“Thanks, Bette”

“Well I am sure you have heard Allie on about Kit a dozen times or more”

“Huh –huh”

“Kit is my sister, I love her very much but we had a bit of tempestuous relationship growing up.  She’s about seven years older then me.  When my mom died she moved out of our home completely as her and daddy never saw eye to eye.  Kit was only seventeen then.  She had just started a band and decided to go on the road.  I was only ten years old and couldn’t understand why she was leaving me as well.  Kit followed the cliché of the ‘rock n roll’ lifestyle first by drinking and then delving into the world of drugs.  For the next ten years I never saw her.  I’d hear snippets of stories of an up and coming band and see several pictures now and again in magazines or papers but that would be about it.  In the mean time daddy focused all of his time on me.    He always wanted me to succeed at top level.  Daddy is a very regimented man, he comes from a military background.  In his eyes Kit had failed him because she wasn’t a lawyer or a doctor and now she was following her ‘pipe’ dream of fame and fortune.”
