    Lover’s Lapse – Chapter 12

Bette smiled softly at Tina, “You know that I would gladly give you my last breath right?  Because without you I do not live, I merely exist,” she said quietly.  Tina gazed and Bette and suddenly realized how very tired she looked.  She thought back to earlier today when they had napped together and knew that was probably the only sleep that Bette had.  “Bette, you really look exhausted.  Why don’t you go to my house and get a shower and some real sleep?” Tina said softly.  Bette looked at her watch and realized that it was already 6p.m.  “Are you sure that you two are o.k.?” she asked.  “I’m fine and Liza is doing well,” replied Tina.  “Liza huh?  I like that,” said Bette as she realized that this was the first time that her daughters name was spoken by either of them.  “I thought that Alice was coming back sometime today.  Why don’t you call her and have her come and pick you up?” said Tina.  “Well we both know how Alice gets without her usual ten hours of beauty sleep,  answered Bette as she grinned at Tina.  “I’ll take a cab rather than listen to her ***** about how studies indicate that the average human looses enough sleep over their lifetime to add a full year to their life.”  Both Tina and Bette suddenly erupted in laughter at the thought of Alice‘s fondness for statistics.

“I do really need to go buy some clothes though,” Bette said as she looked down at her rumpled business suit.  “Don’t be silly, just borrow some of my things,” Tina replied.  “I might just take you up on that offer, said Bette, “I really am pretty tired.”  Bette leaned over the bed and kissed Tina gently on the forehead.  As she straightened back up she took Tina’s hand, “I don’t expect things to be easy and I realize that we have a lot to talk about, but promise me that you won’t give up on us,” she said softly.  “We do have things to talk about Bette.  I have to learn how to trust you all over again but most importantly you have to be prepared to take things slowly.  We both have to learn to forgive ourselves and each other,” whispered Tina.  Bette walked toward the door and stopped.  She turned to Tina and said, “Thank you for our daughter.”
