    loving that you’ve wasted

With the windows wide open, the two twenty-somethings sang aloud for everyone on the interstate to hear.

These were the moments where Helena was happiest—riding alongside her best friend in the entire world, singing at the top of her lungs and feeling like she was 12 again.

She and Dylan never did things like this.  Dylan never loosened up, not even for a moment.  She felt so closed in or locked up sometimes with Dylan.

But it was never that way with Bette.  Bette accepted Helena as she was—the funny, almost childlike woman and the dramatic, spoiled brat.  Bette loved them both.

“Do you believe in true love, Bette?” Helena asked.

“Yeah, I do.  I just don’t think you always end up with them.”

    “Why is that?”

    “Experience.”

“Wait!  You think you’ve met your true love?” Helena turned in her seat, “And you’ve never told me!!!”

    “I’ve met her.”

    “Who is she?”

    “I can’t tell you that.”

With a smack of her lips, Helena replied, “Why not!?”

“Because I’ve made a wish for her and if it doesn’t come true, it’ll be all your fault.” Bette chuckled.

“Well, at least describe her to me.  I want to know what this woman looks like that’s taking my best friend’s heart.”

Bette swallowed, “Um.  Well, she’s about your height.  She’s a brunette.  She’s got this perfect little body.  It’s almost like she could wear a burlap sack and still look beautiful.  She’s got sky-blue eyes that just seem to know something about me that I still don’t know.”

    “She sounds beautiful.”

    “That she is.”

“And if she doesn’t want someone as beautiful and smart as you, then she’s an idiot.”

“Well, what about you?  Do you think Dylan is your true love?”

Helena took a pause, “I don’t believe in true love, Bette.”

    “Why not?”

“Of all the girls I dated, I’ve never felt anything for them that surpassed a level of romantic love to something higher.  I mean, the closest girl to really get me like that is you.”  Bette sighed, “But we’re best friends, so I don’t know.”

“Right.”  Bette focused on the road, “I’m going to pull off at the next rest stop to stretch my legs.  Do you need anything?”
