March Madness III ~ Call of the Wild~ A Backstory Holiday Tale

The pack’s restlessness was obvious even to Bette. She finally asked, “T?  Is something up with everyone?”

“Hmm?” Tina absently answered.  She was reading a script that was actually promising and she had just gotten to the dénouement.

    “T!”

    Tina jumped, “What?”

    “Is something up with everyone?”

Puzzled, Tina asked, “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know.  The pack seems sort of, I guess, restless.”

    “Oh.  It’s the equinox.”

    “The equinox.”

“Yeah, the vernal equinox,” Tina replied and returned to the script.

    ~~

Bette understood that Spring was coming.  She sensed it too, although in Southern California the changes were far more subtle than they had been in Philadelphia.

Yet, it seemed that it was more than that with the pack.

She broached the subject again when Tina was brushing her teeth and was less distracted than she had been the first time Bette had asked.  “T, I know you said that the pack was just restless because the vernal equinox is approaching, but it seems like more than that.”

Tina continued brushing as she replied, her voice garbled, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about it.”

It took Bette a few moments to decipher what Tina had said and she knew that it would be better to wait until Tina was done with her nightly rituals.

When Tina reappeared in the bedroom, she slipped under the bedcovers.  Bette slid down and Tina turned on her left side and slipped her right leg between Bette’s.  She rested her right arm on Bette’s chest and her head in the crook of Bette’s neck.

    “What’s up, T?”

    “They need to howl.”

    “You didn’t just say howl?”

    “Yeah.  At the venal equinox.”

    ~~

As the first day of Spring approached, Bette fretted.  Tina had explained that the pack was going to howl, Weho or not.  Tina insisted that it was instinctual and could not be restrained, though Bette was skeptical.

She tried to think of some way to mask the sound of eleven howling wolves.  Bette thought that jackhammers might work.  She found a road work site and parked her car 200 feet away.  She was delighted that the machines were deafening, even from so far away. Certain she had solved the dilemma; she happily reported her research results to her partner.

    1. [“Bette! My parents! MY PARENTS? Oh, gross. Gross. Ugh. The visual. “] ROFLMAO … excuse me please, I must go outside and howl now. Thanks! wonderful, as always!

    2. LMAO….i really needed this chapter to lighten up my mood, this was beyond funny and the last line – priceless!!!! thank you, thank you and Happy Easter

    3. Yay! What a happy howling family! I wonder what title they’ll give to the recording? “A Chorus of Howls and Fvck, Fvck Solo”? LOL! Tina and Red comparing notes on mating and the visual of four pairs of wolves in heat in La Casa TiBette made me howl in glee! The mommies should protect the innocence of Angie and her little cousins once those couples give in to their instinct. This chapter is also another example of Bette’s undying devotion to Tina and her carnivorous family. “Bette lightly placed her hand on Tina’s hip and closed her eyes as she imagined her love flowing through her fingertips and into Tina. She thought she felt Tina’s love flowing back.” => I heart these sweet lines. Muchas gracias for all your March Madness posts, Spumoni! I may not always have the time to leave a comment, but I do appreciate your sweet, funny and well-crafted stories and I always read and reread them. Looking forward to your next holiday surprise. Happy howling Easter, Spumoni! Cheers! :>

    5. I’m read this in the office and I had to make sure not to laugh out loud. The last part was priceless! This is such a great story. Thank you for posting! :)

    6. Happy Easter. It was funny as always. Yesterday when I was at a bike ride I thought ‘What will she do with all the wolves at Easter? They will probably be more interested in the bunny then in the eggs and Angelica will be devastated if one wolve would kill the Easter bunny.’ I’m looking forward for the Easter-story. :) I did not expect it now, because in your tradition you will send it a bit late. :) Not that I care as long as there will be a Easter-story.

    7. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! Oh Gosh! You made us laugh real hard, while turning the pages of your story. Jeezzz! Our tummies hurt, after doing such an effort. Ah, thanks, dear friend, for all the joy you brought us. It was the BEST Easter gift you could ever give us, including Bette’s howl. Happy Easter for you and your beautiful half. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. – Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    8. When I see the full moon, I want to howl. I once saw a tremendous display of Northern Lights and REALLY wanted to howl at that. Did I tell you I was born in the Year of the Dog? Catching up after moving. On to the next.
