    One step at a time…8

Bette unbuttoned her blouse and slipped it over her shoulders. She hesitated for an instant before pressing the discarded garment to her face, hoping to catch a hint of Tinas scent, still lingering from their goodnight embrace. Bette inhaled and there it was, barely discernible, little more than a memory. But all it took was that whisper of fragrance and Tina was back in her arms again, her cheek resting against Bettes, her sigh like a prayer, those warm, teasing lips leaving a trail of kisses along Bettes jaw, down her throat, to the V right below her collar.

“I had the most perfect day with you,” Tina said softly.

“Was it me, or the ice cream?”

    “Is that a trick question?”

Bette replied by putting her hand on the back of Tinas neck, guiding her in for one more long, slow kiss, tracing her tongue lightly across Tinas lower lip.

The heat between them, the chemistry, was undeniable. But it was more than that. There was a genuineness about Tina, a realness, that Bette found irresistible. An amazing capacity to be fully and completely in the moment. Whether she was savoring that first lick of ice cream or shaking her golden hair free from its loose ponytail and allowing the afternoon breeze to rush through it, Tina lived in the now. And this ability to be so intensely engaged and present, on top of her natural warmth, drew people to Tina. Bette noticed it again and again all day. The woman in front of them in line at the ice cream counter. The usher at the movie theater. The waitress who took their dinner order. An encounter with Tina, no matter how brief, inevitably left someone smiling. Especially Bette.

When the phone rang two hours later, Bette was settling in under cool crisp sheets.

“Did I wake you?” Tina asked.

“No. I was lying here thinking about today. About you,” Bette said softly, closing her eyes.

“Theres something I need you to know, but I dont want you to think you have to do anything about it.”

Bette opened her eyes in the darkness. “Okay.”

“I told Eric I met someone. I broke up with him,” Tina said.

    “Really?”

There was a long pause. “I just I want to have the freedom to see where things go. With you and me. But I dont expect you to”

“Tina. Im not seeing anyone else. I dont want to see anyone but you.”

    “You dont?”

    “No.”

Bette could hear a soft exhale, and she longed to draw Tina into her arms, hold her impossibly close, and offer reassurances with her body that words could never convey.

    “Bette?”

    “Yes.”

    “Thisus”

“I know,” Bette whispered, closing her eyes. “I know.”

    1. This story has all the characteristics of haiku: it has lightness, simplicity, openness and depth.
Now we must last through the day until another chapter can be posted. Thank you.

    2. This chapter had a languorousness about it that made me weak the knees. I loved the unsayable understanding between B&T in the end. And FFC, I refuse to be amazed by your writing anymore, now it will simply be an expectation that each chapter will bring exponential pleasure. :O)
