Out of Closet (B&T time-travel romance), Ch. 27, Part 4

Tina handed Bette a copy from Maxine’s diary where she was talking about Katie’s death. Bette began to read in silence and after she finished, she just sat there quietly, with tears streaming down her face. Tina grabbed Bette’s hands again and began to rub them gently, not sure how she could comfort her.

“Is there anything else?” Bette asked through her sobbing.

“Yes,” Tina answered softly, “There was a clipping from the newspaper that Maxine had in her diary. It was a little article from the local newspaper about the untimely death of Katherine Porter-Palmer after she blessed her family with a healthy and beautiful baby boy. The author of the article was covering the funeral and there’s a really interesting piece at the end of it.”

Tina handed the clipping to Bette, who took it into her shaking hands and began to read aloud. Her voice was cracking with emotion and Tina’s heart was literally hurting at the sight of Bette’s pain and vulnerability.

‘Even though a lot of people participated, at the end only the immediate family members were left to mourn the departure of their beloved daughter, wife and mother. It was a very emotional but peaceful occasion and all the parties present were comforted by the belief that Katherine Porter went back to her heavenly home to rest with her creator.

And then, an unusual occurrence happened that caused a slight commotion when a tall and slender figure, clothed in a black cloak that covered the face, appeared at the cemetery. That mystery person was first noticed by your humble servant as he or she was watching the ceremony from afar, sitting inside of a small carriage with its windows covered. However, after everybody left including the family, the stranger approached the freshly made grave site and put a beautiful array of wild flowers on the grave. The stranger’s shoulders were shaking from lamenting. The figure slowly made its way back to the carriage and disappeared, never to be seen again.

Some superstitious persons attributed this mysterious appearance to heavenly visitors, others were whispering in taverns and shops that it was the ghost of Katherine’s sister Elizabeth, who disappeared last October under mysterious circumstances. Her vanishing until this day remains an enigma and one may wonder about the sorrowful fate that keeps following this respectable and prominent family.’

    Comments

    1. Tina really does need to tell Bette about Christina, but Tina is part of Christina, so hopefully Bette will stay in the year 2005. She does not need to return to the 1880s.

    2. Do you come back and read comments after a few days? I am caatching up on reding, so this is not timely. I am also embarrassed that my comments are always so repetitive, but I think its because every chapter is the same–ingenious, poignant, funny and fascinating. The story’s threads are like marionettes and you are a master puppeteer.
