    Prodigal Chapter 17

Alice was sitting at the bar already, a glass of white wine in front of her.  Carrie spotted her pretty quickly and kicked her leg over the stool next to her.  “Hey,” she said, plopping down like a little kid.  “I’m sorry I’m late.”

Alice couldn’t help smiling.  Carrie was cute, must be a Kennard thing.  “It’s ok.  I’m just having a glass of wine, take the edge off my day.”

“Has it been a stressful one?” Carrie asked, concerned.

“Honey, if you only knew,” Alice said, shaking her head.

Carrie ordered a Finlandia martini straight up with three olives and indicated that she wanted one for Alice.  At Alice‘s incredulous look, Carrie explained.  “Bette asked me to do her a favor.”

“Bette asked you to do her a favor.  That favor involves giving me vodka,” Alice laughed.

“She asked me to get you drunk.  She said you needed it, and after the day I’ve had, I need it too, so I hope you’re ready cause we’re going to be here awhile,” Carrie said, as the bartender placed her martini in front of her.  She drained it in one swallow, looked at the bartender and said, “Again.”  Turning to Alice while he made her drink she said, “I need you to tell me everything that you can about Helena Peabody.  We’ll deal with your bad day when we’re obliterated.”

Oh, this is bad, Alice thought.  She downed her martini as well and the bartender smiled.  These two were going to have a really high check.

Over three martinis each, Alice told Carrie what she knew.  She started from the beginning, or what she knew to be the beginning.  She started with Bette and Peggy Peabody.  That story clearly made Carrie just a little bit more proud of her sister-in-law.  But then Alice told Carrie about Candace and why Tina and Bette were apart.  Carrie nodded, indicating she had suspected that was the case, but it was still difficult to hear.  Alice talked about the grant application and Tina beating out Bette for the Peabody money “and I’m sure you’ve figured out how well Bette takes failure.”  She told Carrie how Bette just fell apart without Tina, and how Tina came to know, through that fateful grant application, Helena Peabody.  What Alice knew of Helena personally was spotty at best.  She knew Helena made her uncomfortable, especially when Bette was in the room.  She told Carrie that Helena used to say things about her ***** life with Tina in front of Bette.  Carrie grimaced.  And when Tina told Helena that she wanted to start seeing Bette again, Helena rubbed any number of other women in Tina’s face trying to make her jealous.  She told Carrie that Helena had two children and an ex that hated her and also, as everyone knew, Helena had more money than God.
