Pup Chapter 2: The Long Journy Home

    4- Destination

He finally gets there, his sister’s house. No car in the driveway and even though the sun is swiftly setting no lights are on inside either. The door is locked, but even if it wasn’t he wouldn’t dare enter the house so instead he begins to circle it. It’s not a very big house but it’s not a dump and as he makes circles it he sniffs around. He quickly picks up on four distinct human scents, one he identifies as Shane the other is familiar but faded and he can’t put a name or face to it. Two others that he doesn’t recognize. This house is lived in, the distinctive scents of its occupants permeating it even though it’s empty. Shane doesn’t live alone, he wonders who her roommates are. What if they don’t like him? What if they’re mean to him? Or, possibly worse, what if they do like him? What if they’re nice to them?

    What if he hurts them?

Shay lays his duffle bag on Shane’s back porch after circling the house for the tenth time. The sun has already set and although it’s a warm night Shay shivers.

He waits, like a monster in the woods waiting for bad little girls and boys to come wandering through the haunted forest. It seems like a strangely apt comparison to Shay.

    5-Scary Monsters

The back door opens and there stands Shane. Blurry eyed and a little dazed and confused and that’s before she realizes who the dark shape laying on her back porch is. When the realization hits she looks down at him where he lays on her back porch like he appeared in front of her in a puff of smoke. It’s a look of wild bewilderment and amazement like he’s some mythical creature she never knew existed outside of fairy tales. Of course technically he is a mythical creature she never knew existed, but that is neither here nor there…

She asks of course, what he’s doing here.

    He tells her.

Shane takes about ten seconds to process the information and then runs. Runs like he had become a wolf right in front of her, runs like the devil is on her heels.

    Some family.
