    She lingered in the embrace and when she finally felt ready she broke the hold and stepped back, now fully being able to smile. ‘Hi Kit.’

     

    ‘Hey Baby Girl.’

     

    James had been on his way back to the office when he saw Bette come in through the main gallery entrance. He knew how much time she had been spending at the gallery in preparation for the exhibit so was not surprised when she had taken Friday off, she must be exhausted. Now though she was back and he was eager to show her all the messages and flowers she had received as congratulations for a job well done.

     

    He crossed the floor grinning widely. Her momentary paralysis must be her disbelief at what an amazing job that she had done. She had seen it at the opening but now here it was as everyone else would see it. Her greatest, but surely not her last, accomplishment at the CAC.

     

    James greeted her cheerfully, ‘Hey Bette.’ She didn’t reply. ‘Hey Bette,’ he tried again thinking that perhaps she had not heard him the first time. Again no reply. Her attention obviously elsewhere James followed her gaze, seeing who it rested on James spoke again, ‘Oh, Candace Jewell is here. She wanted to see if there were any changes you wanted made to any of the exhibits.’ Bette remained silent. Her gaze still focussed on Candace. ‘Bette?’

     

    ‘Huh?’ Was all Bette managed to say in reply.

     

    ‘The exhibits. Are there any changes you want made? New installations built? Things moved? We can probably get most of it done today although I think it’s great the way it is. I came by at the weekend and this place was packed. I don’t think I’ve ever -’ James allowed his sentence to trail off as Bette started to move away from him.

     

    He followed her quickly as she made her way towards her office. She walked passed Candace, acknowledging her only with the briefest of looks before disappearing into the back of the gallery with James on her trail.

     

    As they walked he started to give her a run down of everything that had been happening in her absence. ‘There are several messages waiting for you. Mostly congratulations on the exhibit. Peggy Peabody’s assistant, Kimberley, called several times. She wants you to call her back as soon as you get a chance. I can put it through now if you’d like -’

    7. Just caught up on this chapter and the last. Both were excellent chapters! You have a captivating story here. After reading the last chapter, I thought that the person Bette saw was Candace but was actually hopint that it would be Tina. At the beginning of this chapter, you had me thinking that it was Tina only to turn around and have Tina waiting for Bette at home at the end! Looking forward to the next chapter.
