Sant-il-Khadra (A Year of Good Fortune) – Chapter 3: Last Night
Story written on July 22, 2006 by monmouth53.
Bette woke with a start. Her pulse was racing without reason. She couldn’t recall having a bad dream, Angelica wasn’t crying, the room was a comfortable temperature and all the windows and doors were closed and locked. There was no indication of anything that would cause her to wake so quickly. None the less Bette had the distinct feeling something was wrong. It was a feeling not unlike the one she had experienced on her bus ride back from the Buddhist monastery, the day Dana had passed.
She closed her eyes, exhaling and breathing in deeply. She tried to calm her herself, reaching out with her mind on the off chance she’d would pick up on some current of telepathy, tapping into floating premonitions of the things that were disturbing her. All Bette could sense, however, was the distinct feeling that somewhere, the plates of fortune were shifting in the life of someone she was connected to; shifting in a way that would simultaneously shift her own.
Suddenly Bette was overwhelmed by the need to go check on Angelica. She rose from her bed and walked over to the crib where her daughter slept. Angelica was probably ready to sleep in a separate room, she’s been sleeping through the night consistently for some time now, but Bette was hesitant to let her daughter out of her sight for even a moment. She was worried the slightest slip in attention would part them for good. These days she felt as though she was constantly looking over her shoulder, waiting for Tina to find them and take the girl away.
Angelica was currently living up to her name, sleeping peacefully as thought she were some heavenly cherub torn from the canvas of a renaissance painting. Moving away from the crib, Bette walked over to the window, opening it and staring out into the rainy night. Baltimore had been boiling and humid, and the rain the past two days had been a relief from the overwhelming heat. She head storms like this, which had rolled in off the ocean without warning, were hitting all over the coasts now. She’d heard there was even one heading for L.A., usually rainless and choked by dry heat in the summer.

Wow…Bette has some bigs ones don’t she? Tina will kick her ass when she comes back to LA. Unless a miracle happens I can’t see Bette getting any type of custody, jail time maybe but not custody. But hey this is fan fiction so who knows…great story please post soon.
